The Mindy Project 3×15 ‘Dinner at the Castellanos’: Daddy Issues

Mindy Family Danny

After last week’s bombshell that Mindy was pregnant, it made sense that this would be the only subject that this week’s episode would focus on. She had to come to terms with her pregnancy, and to do that she had to tell Danny she was pregnant. Unfortunately, her perfect plan of taking him on a romantic weekend to break the news was ruined. By none other than Danny’s father Alan Castellano.

The last time the audience saw Alan, he was trying to demonstrate to Danny that he had his life together. He had a solid job, had a new family, and was attempting to reconnect with his sons. But that time Danny spent with Alan didn’t show the whole picture. When Alan came back to New York, he was forced to deal with the rest of the life he left behind, in the form of Annette.

Surprisingly Annette was attempting to keep from getting vengeance on Alan (save for a few smarmy remarks) and was trying to show that she too was moving on with a new life. At least, right up until Alan made it clear that he was trying once again to push a child off onto Danny.

I have to admit, this surprised me. When we last saw Alan he seemed like a good father, and Dani seemed like a good kid. Now they are actually revealed to be a crummy father who is still trying to make his son take on his responsibilities, and a spoiled teenager.  It’s a huge change from the last episode, but I actually liked it. Mindy needed to believe that her relationship with Danny was in danger in this episode, and this was a perfect way to do it.

This, of course, makes the touching resolution where Danny confirms to Mindy that he is happy with their newly made family, all the more touching. It is one of my favorite sequences that the show has ever done, even more emotional by the fantastic acting by Mindy Kaling and Chris Messina (someone just continuously toss Emmys at these guys, please).

I don’t know where the show is going from here, but after this fantastic episode, I can’t wait to see. Mindy and Danny are certainly not going to be perfect parents, but they are going to be good and – hopefully – hilarious ones.

Notes and Observations

  • Annette throws guilt dinners for Mindy, and only Mindy. That’s…kind of a sweet gesture. I think? I can never tell with her.
  • Mindy got Annette a “Wine of the Day” club membership. That sounds like something Mindy would do.
  • “This is something only family should see, like when Ma cooks eggs in her bra.” I…I’m not sure how that works. I’m not sure I WANT to know how that works.
  • Dot lays in on Alan: “Thirty years you’ve been gone. This woman [Annette] was shattered, leaving me to pick up the pieces. That’s why I don’t have a husband.” I think we all need to take a moment and acknowledge that Dot is wonderful and awesome.
  • Annette on life after Alan: “My hair turned blonde, like a princess.”
  • Let’s all start the guessing on what gender child Mindy is having. Annette assumed it would a be a boy (she mentioned “my grandson” at one point in the episode), so I’m guessing they’ll actually make it a girl.
