The Mentalist 6×06 ‘Fire and Brimstone’: or Tattoos are all the rage

Source: CBS

The person who killed Kira Tinsley, supposedly Red John, has a tattoo of three dots on his shoulder. So Jane sets out to gather all of his remaining suspects in one location and check all their shoulders, at gun point.

There are five of them and one by one Jane and the gang round them up and get them to agree to meet Jane at the same time and place as everyone else. Three of which agree to come along without any hesitation. The other two are rather opposed to it, and the split is exactly where we have come to suspect it. We know Reed Smith (Seen here as Solomon Grundy) is at least part of the Tyger Tyger conspiracy. When Jane approaches him he is all too interested in what Jane knows and is more than willing to show up. Jane doesn’t even need to talk Sherriff McAllister (whom I’ve made into Scarecrow) in person, one phone call and he agrees. Gale Bertram (Captain Cold, I just thought the glasses looked funny on him) agrees so fast it happens off screen. All three of these people, as I suspected, are working with Red John. All three of them have the same three dot tattoos on their shoulders, and all three are dirty cops wrapped up in the whole Tyger Tyger thing. The other two did not want to get involved. Lisbon had to promise Ray Haffner a favor and a lot of sweet talk before he would agree. Bret Stiles is in hiding, and also dying. Jane had to help him escape the FBI in order for him to come along. Ultimately everyone is assembled and it’s time for the show.

Now as crazy as this game has gotten them having the tattoos really doesn’t mean much. I still believe that none of them are Red John, although they are apparently in league with him. Haffner and Stiles’ lack of tattoos also could be misleading. If the three dots are the mark of Tyger Tyger then Red John may not necessarily have one. So who is Red John? I don’t know. The episode ended before we could find out, but we are close. We should know in the next episode or two… supposedly. My money is still on none of them being Red John, or Bret Stiles. An interesting thought was raised though: what about Van Pelt? My mother actually mentioned it off hand, but the more she thought about it the more she liked the idea. Interesting theory without much evidence, but it does make you think, what if Red John turns out to be someone on the team? How awesome would that be?! A hell of a twist and one I would love to see.

Other big point for this episode: on the way to Jane’s house for the big confrontation he pulls his car over for a heart to heart with Lisbon. He talks about how much she means to him, and he’ll never be able to really let her know. They embrace, Jane pickpockets her phone and drives away. It was all a ploy, partially. He really did mean what he said and it was his goodbye in case things go south. Thing is, I don’t like where this is going. NOT AT ALL. For various reasons there is a television belief that there must always be romantic tension. There must always be someone in love with someone. With Rigsby and Van Pelt’s relationship winding down, and their eventual departure from the show, they are moving the love story to Jane and Lisbon. Jane and Lisbon have always had a brother/sister relationship. It was funny, quirky, cute, and different. For example… Psych: eccentric con man in love with straight laced female cop. Castle: eccentric male writer in love with straight laced female cop. Bones: eccentric female scientist in love with straight laced male cop (whoa! They really are just shattering those clichés). You get my point. Yet here is The Mentalist. Eccentric former con man, working closely with straight laced female cop, BUT WAIT they have a more complex relationship? One not built on romantic attraction but mutual respect? A plutonic working relationship where men and woman can be friends and have a big brother little sister type thing? Blasphemy! It’s not like that ever happens in the real world. I hope my sarcasm is bleeding through the text.

Their relationship made this show stand out. It was one of the things that first attracted me to this show. They had Rigsby and Van Pelt for the romance; they didn’t need Jane and Lisbon. It was different and refreshing. Yet over the past few seasons they have been getting more and more close. Currently they are still in the really close friend zone, and if it stays here, if it plateaus then I’m good with that. The entire thing feels forced to me. It feels like a grab for ratings and this show should be better than that. Start Cho up on a new relationship, now’s the perfect time, it almost seemed like they were going to do just that last episode. But I don’t believe that Jane or Lisbon would. First of all I don’t see them potentially damaging their friendship by forming a romance. Second I don’t see Jane ever truly letting go of his family. Even when he let his guard down with Lorelei it was all in an attempt to get Red John. Then third his relationship with Lorelei just ended with her betraying his trust and her gruesome murder. The two women he’s ever really had feelings for were murdered, so now he’s gonna date his best friend? I don’t think so. I simply don’t find it believable for the characters, and on top of that it follows the same cliché everyone else has. So please don’t do it.
