It’s been a rough couple of months for Erica on The Goldbergs. After years of brushing off Geoff, she was finally into him – but it was too late as he had finally moved on. We watched last season and into this one as the brokenhearted teen lost herself for a minute, but regained control. This week though, thanks to a clueless dad, everything was coming up Erica. While her love life got a big push in the right direction, Beverly was coming to terms with her delicious boy being the go to nerd.
Watching Erica bummed over Geoff has probably been one of the most gut wrenching things in the ABC comedy realm over the past year. Tonight this journey all came to an end thanks to…Murray? After knowing absolutely nothing about his daughter’s life, including the fact that she hasn’t dated their neighbor for three years now, he was actually the one that got her with the boy of her dreams. Yes, this came after accidentally giving Dave Kim a glimmer of hope that he had a chance with Erica, but still…We finally got the kiss we’ve all been waiting for!
Really quick though, Adam’s whole thing with Beverly may’ve been this sort of b-plot thing going on but I think it balanced out the episode very well. Mom’s have this picture of who their kids are in their head and sometimes that is far from the truth. Because of my love of homework and stack of Student of the Month awards from elementary school, I am always going to be my mom’s “smart kid.” In reality I am a college grad who makes money making listicles about Beyonce. Smart is not the world I would use to describe me…The same goes with Beverly and Adam. To her he was a Cruise or a Swayze, but to almost anyone else who laid eyes on him – total nerd. Once again, bravo to the casting matching up with the real life homages.
Oh yeah, then there was Barry. It’s rare all three Goldbergs go through something but he did. He had this punk phase and wound up just looking like a pirate. Hot Topic came about in 1988, but perhaps that was too late for this episode’s 1980-something date, or else that would’ve been a hilarious scene at the mall. But I mean, that whole thing with rubbing his eyes with hair dye on them because he was anti establishment was golden.
In the end it was Erica who was the main act, and while she got the boy – will it last? I mean, we still have to see how Geoff’s actual girlfriend handles all of this. And we all know how um, rational…she can be. Erica may have gotten the dream boy but I think her life may be a bit of a nightmare because of it…
