Surviving Jack 1×06 ‘She Drives Me Crazy’: Not the ‘She’ you were thinking of…

Despite the fact that Fox does comedy incredibly well (not that it’s very hard, pretty much every network has a hit comedy) I didn’t think I would enjoy this show as much as I did. First there’s the fact that the lead is an adorable kid that looks like a young, awkward Clark Kent and his character has a dwindling relationship with his mom. I just had a baby boy so cut me some slack. When you add the music (love the episode titles), the stone-washed jeans and all the builder grade oak and brass in everyone’s homes, I’m in heaven. I was only 3 years old in 1991, but I can still appreciate the decade that’s constantly being eclipsed by the one before. The 80’s were not as rad as the 90’s, and this show is proving it.

The highlight of the episode for me was definitely Neil Flynn’s janitor joke (a nod to Scrubs), but otherwise this episode wasn’t my favorite. I loved the continuity in previous weeks with the boys trying out for the baseball team and trying to find dates for the school dance, but Rachel wrestling kind of came out of nowhere. It is still a young show, so there’s no time like the present to introduce wrestling as Rachel’s “thing,” other than being pretty and popular. However, I think we can assume that she won’t be doing any more wrestling so we’ll chock it up to her misadventure of the week.

I’d say that’s one reason why I enjoy dramas much more than comedies, because there’s something completely random every week on these shows with very little continuity. George and Mikey are consistently involved in the most boring story line each episode, which I would also classify as misadventures of the week, but they’re so minor that I can let those slide. Not every episode can be about Frankie and Heather so there have to be some filler episodes somewhere. Even though I’m loving this show and it airs on a decent night (though it has to compete with established hits on the other networks), I don’t see it lasting more than one season. This is coming from someone who wanted Ben & Kate to make it though, so maybe we’ll get lucky.

What did you think of this week’s episode? Does this show have what it takes?
