Supernatural 9×14 ‘Captives’ : “The drama, the fighting; it’s stupid.”

The : CW

First, I’d like to rant a little about these wonky seasons…seasons ending in January, two-week hiatuses in February, the winter hiatus stretching out over two long months.  WTF?!  What is with all this randomness?  It makes it hard for me to keep up and I get all paranoid, checking Hulu every day!  Secondly, I’d like to fangirl out for a second : KEVIN TRAN!!!!!  OK, now that I’ve gotten those things off my chest, let’s dive into this awesome episode!

I have to say, I really enjoyed this episode.  I know that the armies of hell were missing, and I’m generally annoyed when cast members are kept out of episodes, but it can’t be helped I guess.  I mean, there is a lot going on and in order for them to really focus on certain story lines, other characters have to come and go.  This episode felt a lot like it was about Kevin Tran and his mom, the Winchesters, and Castiel.

I’ll start with Castiel, because I really can’t remember what got him here.  This is what random hiatuses do to me; they make me forget important story lines. So Castiel is hunting down Metatron?  And he found one sect of angels trying to live in peace on Earth?  But he somehow ended up at Bartholomew’s headquarters?  I was a little lost on how he ended up there, but I understood what happened when he was there.  It’s a twist on the good versus evil, but in this case it’s sort of badgood (bad angels) versus goodgood (good angels) in the quest to find Metatron because heaven, we gotta open it.  Bartholomew wants to be all badgood, torturing and killing other angels and Castiel opposes this because of his dark past.  Push comes to shove, and Castiel stands his ground.  Worse comes to worst and Castiel refuses to kill Bartholomew until he had to kill him.  I am bummed that Castiel is going solo, though it’s interesting to me as well.  Castiel does well as a lone wolf, but I miss the times when he and the Winchesters were total bros.  I really appreciated that Castiel stood his ground and refused to join the badgood side.  But it’s complicated now that hottie, Bartholomew, is gone.  What will happen?  I foresee Castiel becoming an reluctant leader.  I have faith in Castiel, and I think he’ll be a good leader.

Early in this episode, there is a ghost in a bunker…and look, every single fan knew it was Kevin Tran.  Because Kevin Tran’s death was THE WORST DEATH EVER!  So, lights flicker, there’s cold breath, and we all know it’s Kevin.  He comes through and sends the Winchesters on a mission to rescue his mom…who was being held because…???  I didn’t fully understand that.  (I’m starting to feel kinda dumb that I’m missing plot points in a pretty simple show.)  The boys find Mama Tran and have to inform her of her son’s death.  She comes and collects the ghost (she knows the item to which his spirit is tethered) and takes him home.  Obvs, I was super happy to see Kevin return.  I really thought his death would not be the end of him.  Also, now that they have a contact with a ghost who is stuck behind the veil (because heaven is closed), the Winchesters could really keep using him as they have in the past.  I think this is really interesting and I foresee more Tran Family appearances before this season ends.

And now we reach the Winchesters, continuing their brotherly fight we know all too well.  I’m so tired of them fighting, and the “previously” trailer for this episode really brought it home that their fight is important.  I’m really not sure where I stand.  I think Sam should not be so mad at Dean.  I can understand why Sam thinks Dean saved him because Dean is afraid to be alone…but WHAT IS SO WRONG WITH THAT?!  What is so wrong with Dean not wanting to be alone and wanting to keep Sam alive at all costs? (No really, I’m asking you.  I can’t come to a conclusion on my own.)  The boys worked together really well in this episode, which I liked.  But even after Kevin told them to get over it, they so clearly weren’t.  As the show ended with them going their separate ways…I just don’t know.  I mean, it’s always gotta be them together, right?  Or could this show happen without one of the Winchesters?  I really wonder if the boys working together is integral to this show.

Were you as happy to see Kevin Tran as I was?  Do you think Mama Tran is going to come back later this season (and probably kick some ass)?  Did you miss Crowley?  And where is Abaddon?  How do you feel about the angel situation?  Let me know in the comments!!
