Scandal 5×01 ‘Heavy is the Head’: Princess Diana goes to Washington

Scandal.5.01.1

Welcome back Gladiators to season five of Scandal! If we remember last season ended with a huge information drop as the lives of many characters were shook up. Essentially the only two characters whose lives were almost unaffected were David and Abby. The White House has a new look and the President’s Bedroom has a new guest. The next step was to see how Fitz and Olivia could make their relationship work with the public eye fixed on them and this year’s season premiere tackled that very question with a case of the week to help Olivia come to a realization. A royal tragedy reminiscent of Princess Di starts this year off with a heavy heart. Let’s get to it, onto “Heavy is the Head.”

A Royal Affair

To start off this season Fitz has a dinner gala for the royal family of Caledonia which ends up being a ploy to discuss a new US naval base on Caledonian soil. While Fitz talks shop, Olivia and Abby talk about Princess Emily, an American whose live turned upside-down when she met Prince Richard. Unfortunately for them she overhears their conversation and confronts them about still being a person and not just a spectacle to look at. After the Gala, Fitz and Olivia are enjoying time together when her phone rings, it’s the Queen of Caledonia. Olivia whisks out of the White House to seemingly meet with the Queen, but instead shows up to a car crash, in a tunnel, where Princess Emily has died. And now we are in Princess Diana territory.

The Royal family asks Olivia to make sure no photos of Emily’s body arise leading Quinn on a mission of buying off various sleazy paparazzi when she notices one of the photographs is of a person at the scene who hacked into the Princess’ car and caused the crash. This was no accident, it was murder!

(And just saying that makes me want a Scandal/HTGAWM crossover special. Do it Shonda)

As Olivia searches for the masked murderer it is eventually revealed that the Queen herself hired an assassin to kill Princess Emily because she was pregnant with her bodyguard’s child giving an illegitimate heir to the throne that needed to be taken care of. Olivia is outraged, but due to a nondisclosure and diplomatic immunity she cannot pin the crime on the Queen. Will that stop Olivia? Nope. She tells Prince Richard everything causing him to confront his mother. If she doesn’t abdicate the throne he will reveal what she did to the world. DAM. This started as a fairy tale, but even in the end the Evil Queen didn’t win.

A Broken White House

The big event of last season’s finale was that Fitz told Mellie to get out and he and Olivia were finally together. Well that hadn’t changed at the start of this season with Fitz and Liv spending many passionate moments together sneaking around the White House. Mellie is headed to her swearing in, but Fitz doesn’t agree to come. At first Mellie is outraged until Fitz shows up only to serve her divorce papers. This in turn causes Mellie to lash out at Elizabeth who explains she was never loyal to her, only a means to an end. This leaves Mellie and Cyrus on the outside looking in at a new White House administration.

The Final Minutes

In the final moments a broken Huck reaches out to Jake while Olivia confronts Fitz about their relationship. She doesn’t want to be seen as a spectacle like the Prince and Princess were, at least until they sort out their own issues. But that is the least of their concerns now. Abby, who walks in on them kissing, calls them in for urgent news. They gather around a TV where Sally is revealing photos of Olitz fraternizing in and around the White House. Even before Fitz has announced any divorce to the public he is shown with Olivia, damaging any hope of their relationship being anything but a spectacle in the future.

What questions did this episode answer:

  • Fitz and Olivia made it through the hiatus! But for how long is the question?
  • Fitz found his new Chief of Staff in Elizabeth.
  • Huck is still shaken up from the events of last season, but at least he is looking for help!

What questions does this episode leave us with:

  • Who revealed the information to Sally about Fitz and Olivia?
  • What will the relationship between Huck and Quinn be?
  • Who is the adversary this year: Mellie, Cyrus, Sally or someone else in the shadows?
