Scandal 04x21.1

YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH. Sorry I had to do it.

Although this episode seems a bit slow it was the perfect pace to set up the final cliffhanger. It gave us a few questions to ponder before the hopeful last showdown between Popes in Scandal’s season finale. VP Susan Ross continues to bud heads with Fitz when she brings Olivia Pope in to defend a rape case in the Navy. Meanwhile, Huck and Quinn attempt to get Foxtail out of Russell and Mellie revisits a traumatic place. Let’s get to it, onto “A Few Good Women.”

A Few Good Women

The main focus of this episode is the case of the week which revolves around the story of a female naval officer who was raped by one of her superiors. While VP Susan Ross is on a trip visiting an army vessel she notices that Ensign Amy Martin (guest star Emily Rios, Breaking Bad) has bruises on her wrist. She pulls her aside and asks for an explanation which results in Susan escorting Martin off the ship and into the White House. After getting an earful from Fitz about how she did the wrong thing, Susan decides to do the right thing and call Olivia Pope. Olivia and all the other women on the show attempt to defend this woman’s allegations, but it doesn’t help that Fitz isn’t on board or that the navy sends lawyer Virgil Plunkett (guest star Dan Byrd, Cougar Town) who has never tried a rape case and idolizes the Admiral (guest star Glenn Morshower, X-Men: First Class) in question. Olivia attempts to take over the questioning, but the Admiral is adamant she stay a bystander in a military proceeding.

As the story progresses Olivia learns that Martin is pregnant with the Admiral’s child and wants to get an abortion. As much as Olivia knows the child’s DNA would implicate the Admiral, she grants her client’s wishes. With her back against a wall and the Pentagon throwing the word classified on everything, Olivia calls Fitz to get her the documents specifying the Admiral’s location on the night in question. He does just that and Olivia is able to piece together the truth. The Admiral’s right hand used his boss’ key card to cover for him while he raped Martin. The Admiral is appalled by these accusations until a video leaks of him dragging Martin into his office causing the Admiral to resign and the navy to rethink their judicial system.

Mellie Revisits Springfield

The next step in Mellie’s campaign is one she hoped to never take. She’s down in the preliminary voting and needs a big win to bring herself back into the race. This is when Elizabeth has the great idea to send Mellie to Springfield as it has the greatest turnout of female voters in Virginia. Only problem is the last time Mellie visited Springfield was the day that Jerry died. Elizabeth gets a speech together for Mellie, but it is filled with references to Jerry and her loss. Mellie is enraged by this and tells Elizabeth to get out before breaking down. After thinking it through, she decides that it is time to get over this obstacle and go to Springfield. She gets rid of Elizabeth’s speech and speaks from the heart about her want to bring a fair judicial system for sexual assault claims unlike her husband showing her independence from him. You go Mellie! Mellie for President.

What is Foxtail?

The episode starts with Jake lying in Olivia’s bed while she tends to him. He asks about where Russell is, but Olivia doesn’t say anything. She leaves for work only to enter the apartment across the hall where Huck and Quinn are torturing Russell to figure out what Foxtail is. She promises Russell something worse than death if he doesn’t talk. As she leaves Huck and Quinn begin to torture him again. Olivia returns to talk to Russell, but he ends up trying to break a cyanide pill stashed in his tooth. Luckily Huck is there to stop him, but the event causes Olivia to have flashbacks of her own kidnapping. Eventually Jake comes by to have a one-on-one with Russell. They sit and have a beer, discussing how similar they are and how annoying Rowan can be. After their heart-to-heart Jake ties Russell back up so Huck can continue his torture.

The Final Minutes

After Olivia thanks Martin for her bravery, Quinn notices a picture of Virgil Plunkett that does not resemble the man that helped them in their case. Back at the apartment Huck is making no progress with Russell when there is a knock at the door. It’s Virgil! He knocks Huck out and unties Russell before they escape. HE’S B613?! They discuss Foxtail as they leave. Cut to Mellie entering a meeting at the White House where one of her secret service calls her Foxtail. And who is the meeting with? Well it’s Papa Pope himself of course! WHAAAAAAT.

What questions did this episode answer:

  • Mellie is Foxtail.
  • Jake is looking much better than we last saw.
  • Mellie was able to overcome her biggest obstacle while showing that she is independent from her husband.
  • Susan seems to have a knack for knowing what is right in wrong, seems that she could be an underdog for Presidential candidate.

What questions does this episode leave us with:

  • What is Rowan’s plan for Mellie?
  • Are Team Takedown going to be able to finish Rowan in the season finale?
