Scandal 4×12 ‘Gladiators Dont Run’: Who bought Olivia Pope?

Scandal 04x12.1

Now I’m not sure about the other ShondaLand viewers, but I was not the most comfortable watching an episode dedicated to selling Olivia Pope, an African-American, in an auction. As the auction for Olivia begins, Fitz and the White House and Jake and OPA try to find ways to bid on her including getting in bed with terrorists with some familiar faces. Meanwhile Fitz attempts to get Nichols to resign, but the vice-president has a few tricks up his sleeves. Lots of drama this week, and characters start to unravel under the pressure of this Scandal. Let’s get to it, onto “Gladiators Don’t Run!”

WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS

The episode starts with Abby sitting on a bench attempting to contact Olivia. When she doesn’t respond Abby goes to OPA to investigate, but Huck and Quinn tell her that she’s out. They can’t trust her anymore because she’s part of the White House now. ‘You’re not a gladiator anymore.’ She leaves and goes to Olivia’s apartment where she finds the broken wine glass. Meanwhile Fitz tells Mellie that Olivia could be anywhere, but she reassures him that they will find Liv. Cyrus brings Fitz some documents to fire his Secret Service who are under the control of Nichols saying that the SEALS will take over and he has prepared a resignation for Nichols. Jake is brought to Fitz who wants in on the bidding for Olivia. Jake reveals the kidnapper is a mercenary and that the auction was most likely Olivia’s idea.

Ian is setting up a new operations base, but his henchman Gus says this was not the plan. Gus says Ian isn’t thinking straight. Ian says Olivia is working with them, but Gus says you don’t work with the hostage. He pipes down in fear and Ian takes a call from Nichols. Ian tells him that Olivia is his now and Nichols says Fitz has to get her back for this to work. Ian says that deal is off and he’s selling her to the highest bidder. Ian hangs up on Nichols as the dark net is set up for the auction. Fitz is told that it is a private site on a dark corner off the internet and some dirty people they know can get in on the bidding and they can piggy back. Quinn asks Jake about the auction and that Fitz is going to have terrorists bidding for the US. The government in bed with terrorists? WHAT.

Huck says Olivia is going to die and get hacked up, but Jake ensures him that they can scrape up their money to bid on her. Huck says he has $2 billion. Uh what? Huck is a billionaire? Jake asks if Huck used the B613 algorithm they used to skim small amounts, but Huck took the money from B613 as payment for being in the hole. Ian asks Olivia how much she thinks she will go for and asks if she will go for $500k. She thinks she can get $1 billion or $1.5 billion. Ian offers to let her choose from the bidders when Gus gets a gun and shoots Ian before the bidding starts. Gus says he’s in charge now. Huck looks for the auction site in desperation. The bids are up to $240 million. One of the techs is freaking out over Gus shooting Ian, but they agree they need to stick with it. Gus comes over to Olivia and reassures her through attempts at flattery and touching her face. Olivia says if anything gets close to her mouth again it may get bitten off. The bids hit $300 million.

Nichols asks Cyrus if health reasons are the best excuses for his resignation saying they can work something out. Cyrus threatens it will be resignation or prison. Nichols chooses prison and explains that if he is going down for treason, Fitz and Cyrus will for declaring war over Olivia. Huck continues to look for the auction site, but to no avail. He explains they need a known terrorist to gain access giving Jake an idea. Jake along with Quinn and Rosen go to visit Maya, Olivia’s mom. After bartering a deal for some basic TV, Maya agrees to help and gives Jake the name Marie Wallace. Cyrus comes to Fitz saying Nichols will use Olivia against them. Fitz says they need to prove Nichols faked his assassination. Cyrus confronts Elizabeth about her involvement telling her she will testify against Andrew and won’t go to prison. As the bid hits $500 million Ian’s phone rings and Gus picks it up. Maya tells them they need Gustavo Pineda, but he’s only expecting one of them. Huck agrees, but he’s told he needs to kill the three men in the room in satisfy Gus.

Nichols sees Elizabeth and confronts her about meeting with Cyrus. Mellie goes to Nichols and tells him it is over, but he says he will tell the world about their affair and ruin Fitz’s legacy. Jake goes to check on Huck who has managed to behead the men saying Gus would need proof. What is wrong with Huck?! Olivia attempts to convince the other kidnappers to turn on Gus and rig the auction in favour of the United States, but they aren’t phased by it. They just want the money. Abby goes to Fitz about Olivia who tells her she is missing. Then Abby confronts Rosen for not telling her, but he says she didn’t have high enough clearance. She wanted to help find her best friend.

Meanwhile Mellie and Fitz have a heart-to-heart. She explains that Nichols threatened to ruin them then asks what Fitz wants more than anything to which he responds Jerry. She asks what he wants that is obtainable and he responds with bringing Olivia home safe. She tells him to ask what she wants and responds saying she wants to be the President of the United States and run the world. WHAT. Fitz looks shocked, but says he will let Nichols walk to protect her reputation. Jake talks to Quinn about Huck’s behaviour, but she reassures him that he will be fine once Olivia is home. Cyrus wakes Fitz and brings him to the situation room. Gus tells Olivia she was sold, despite the auction not being over and that the bidder is Iran. In the situation room, they tell Fitz that Iran bought her. He wants to set up an extraction plan, but they want to neutralize her given the volatile information she knows. The CIA director protests and Cyrus tells her to leave.

As Quinn and Jake argue over who will buy Olivia, Huck returns and says she won’t be thought of as human and will be sent back to Fitz piece by piece. Quinn yells at him to stop thinking that way, but Huck says Olivia is dead. Cyrus and Fitz discuss his actions in the situation room. Fitz explains that Mellie meets every plane of military casualties and they are his fault. He needs to get Olivia back. Cyrus promises to do everything he can to get her back. Olivia, with bag over her head, is brought out of an SUV. The bag is removed and she sees who bought her (but we don’t of course). So who bought her?! Let the discussion begin!
