Scandal 4×11 ‘Where’s the Black Lady?’: The face that launched a thousand ships

Scandal 04x11.1

Last week the focus was on Olivia Pope’s situation through her eyes, but now the focus turns to everyone else who must come together to do whatever it takes to find her. Scandal is certainly not as intense this week, but it leaves us with a lot of fist-clenching, anger-inducing scenes as the story plays out. Too many people with so many different ideas surrounding the kidnapping of Olivia Pope. If they were all on the same page this situation could have been wrapped up in two episodes, instead it will be here to stay for a few more episodes if not the remainder of this season. Let’s get to it, onto “Where’s the Black Lady!”

WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS

The episode starts with Fitz calling his secretary to get Jake, Cyrus, the NSA, the FBI, the CIA and any other agency when the Secret Service interrupts him. They explain the Vice President has instructed them with watching over Fitz so he doesn’t go looking for Olivia and they reassure him that they have eyes everywhere. Fitz goes to Cyrus and asks him to get the joint chiefs together in the morning to discuss West Angola. He is then with Mellie who admits to sleeping with Nichols again until she found he was sleeping with Elizabeth North. However, Mellie decides that she wants their partnership instead, but Fitz is not in the mood to talk about this. His evening ends with a call to Nichols in which he explains he will consider the war if Nichols delivers proof of life. Cut to Olivia holding today’s newspaper reciting cue cards explaining that if the war is not declared in 48 hours she will be killed. The video is shown to Fitz by the Secret Service and he is at a loss for words.

Elizabeth North is seen putting her daughter to bed when Huck intervenes. ‘Where is Olivia Pope?’ He threatens North’s daughter. North confronts Nichols about his tactics, but Nichols says he did it to save the administration to pave the path for his own presidency. Fitz has a meeting in the Oval Office, but he is distracted by the video until Cyrus brings up that Tom wants a pardon. The newly enraged Fitz visits Tom who explains he doesn’t regret his decision of killing Fitz’s son. ‘The face that launched 1,000 ships.’ Again Tom uses the Troy analogy, but this time it means something. Olivia is the cause of war, Tom always knew! Fitz wants to know where he is safe and who he can trust, but Tom proclaims no one is trustworthy and nowhere is safe. That’s when Fitz realizes the only safe place: Olivia’s condo!

Fitz visits the condo where Jake meets him. Fitz explains the situation and that Jake needs to find her. He brings the video to OPA who discover that the glass Olivia drinks from in the video left a reflection of her captor. Olivia you genius! Meanwhile Ian lets slip to Olivia that it is not his plan, but our plan leading her to believe that he isn’t in charge. As OPA attempt to find Olivia a woman named Rose enters asking ‘Where’s the black lady?’ before leaving. Uh what? The joint-chiefs meet on how to deal with the West Angola issue. Fitz wants to ensure the soldiers’ safety, but Nichols talks out of turn and tells him to start the war sooner rather than later. Abby comes to Cyrus’ office where he can’t comprehend why Fitz is agreeing with Nichols and that he didn’t even know about the West Angola Coalition.

OPA comes up dry on a facial recognition of the man in the glass so Huck decides to revisit North. ‘If you hurt my daughter Olivia Pope is dead.’ Huck agrees and proceeds to open a toolbox. We know what that means. Fitz walks through White House suspicious of everyone. He stands on the balcony when Mellie comes out to confront him about his behaviour. He gets close to her and explains what is happening. He has to let Olivia die, he can’t give in to the terrorists. Mellie says that if he loves Olivia, he needs to save her. Fitz goes on TV and declares war on West Angola. He returns to the Oval Office where Nichols sits at his desk. Nichols explains that this is just the beginning and Olivia won’t be back for a while, using her to fix the administration.

Rose returns to OPA asking again for help as her friend Louise has gone missing. Just so happens she is Olivia’s neighbour from across the hall. OPA check out her apartment and Huck finds her ring. They hack the wi-fi, find the last use and BAM he’s linked to Ian aka the man in the glass. Meanwhile at the White House Cyrus confronts Fitz about not asking his advice on West Angola. Fitz gives him some documents to look over and dismisses him. Olivia tells Ian to kill her, but he reveals that she is here for the remainder of the President’s term. North comes to Mellie and explains she has nothing to do with the kidnapping, tells her that Huck visited her home and the reveals the marks his torture left on her back. North explains that Nichols will keeping asking for more now that he has all the cards. Mellie confronts him about this and he explains he wants Mellie back and she falls for it. Mellie no!

Cyrus finally looks at the documents Fitz gave him which read ‘They have Olivia.’ He realizes it justifies Fitz’s behaviour. Olivia tries to convince Ian to sell her to another country as she is a huge commodity and that he could get rich instead of babysitting her for the next three years. Cyrus meets with Fitz and proclaims his gratitude for telling him about the situation. Mellie arrives and tells Fitz that she fixed the situation. A flashback shows Mellie slept with Nichols, but took his phones which North then brought to OPA. Mellie YES!

OPA looks through the phones, finds calls to Ian, and trace the location to an abandoned hangar. With no help from the White House Jake goes to Rosen to sign off on a drug raid bringing in the aid of the DEA. They infiltrate the hangar and enter the set where Jake finds a blanket, but no sign of Olivia. As Fitz watches the horror in West Angola he gets called by Olivia who gets interrupted by Ian. He explains the bidding on Olivia Pope will start soon so stay tuned. OOOOOOOH!

What questions did this episode answer:

  • Nichols is behind the kidnapping to help start the war in West Angola. He hired Ian and got Elizabeth onboard with the plan. His end game is to fix the administration and assume the presidency himself.
  • Nichols is also apparently in charge of a number of people at the White House to monitor Fitz. Let the conspiracies start!
  • OPA found Olivia’s ring through the neighbour’s friend and her persistence.
  • Ian is far more than a lackey.
  • Mellie is not afraid to get a little dirty to get some answers.

What questions does this episode leave us with:

  • What is Olivia’s plan now that she has convinced Ian to sell her?
  • Now that Nichols is no longer in control of Olivia, will Fitz be able to stop the war in West Angola before the number of casualties skyrockets?
  • What will Nichols do to Mellie after she betrayed him?
  • Will there be repercussions for Huck’s torture of Elizabeth?
  • What will Jake and Fitz do to save Olivia?
