Scandal 4×10 ‘Run’: This is just the beginning

Scandal 04x10.1

And we’re back Gladiators. After waiting months to see what happened after the abrupt and shocking fall finale cliffhanger, Scandal brings us right back into the action with a story focused around the question everyone is asking: WHERE IN THE WORLD IS OLIVIA POPE? No one else really mattered in this episode, and that is perfectly alright with me. Seems like Shonda Rhimes has been talking too much with Gillian Flynn because this is a real Gone Girl of an episode. Prepare for the most psychologically thrilling episode of Scandal to date. Let’s get to it, onto “Run!”

WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS

The episode starts with Olivia running through a third-world facility with a gun in hand. But before we can get anymore about that we are flashed back to the last scene of 2014. Jake comes over to Olivia’s, she decides she picks herself over Jake and Fitz and then she suggests having some fun on the piano. As Jake leaves Olivia is taken by a man in a mask and hoodie. Jake returns moments after to find Olivia is missing. He runs down to the street in his underwear searching for her. A car takes off down the street prompting Jake to chase after it. He memorizes the license plate ‘GH89I1’ and calls it in to his contacts.

Jump back to the flashback again, but instead we follow the point of view of Olivia. Instead of being taken downstairs, she is brought across the hall to a neighbour’s place. The owner is duct taped on the couch while a team of men are there to kidnap her. They have placed surveillance in the building, including her condo. When Jake runs downstairs the team enters her condo and remove the cameras. During this time Olivia, like the smarty pants she is, slips a ring off and hides it under her neighbour’s rug. After Jake returns to call in the license plate, he leaves again allowing the team to pack up. They untie the hostage and take off their masks. ‘It’s all over.’ The neighbour rejoices before she gets shot in front of Olivia.

Olivia is brought into an ambulance where she is told to barter for her life. She doesn’t give them the satisfaction, knowing the man in charge isn’t present and so they drug her. Olivia wakes up in a cell where another man, Ian the journalist, is being held as well. In the distant she can hear an Islamic prayer. She realizes that she is there for a purpose and immediately asks to go to the washroom. As she is taken there is scopes out the facility. Meanwhile Ian has lost all hope from being kept in this facility for an undefined amount of time since his old roommate Bradley was shot, but Olivia reassures him that she can fix this. ‘Because I’m Olivia Pope.’

Olivia gets Ian to check her for a tracking device, hoping that her father put one in her just like her mother. Ian tries to bond with Olivia and at first she won’t open up, but she explains that the President is going to be looking for her and that they will be saved. As the days pass Olivia continues her washroom routine, meticulously analyzing every detail. Once in the washroom she notices a breeze from a window close to the ceiling. She takes a wire out of her bra and climbs the sink to investigate. Olivia is able to open the window, but the guards enter and pull her down. They throw her back in her cell with a disgruntled guard pointing a gun at her. She tells him to do it, knowing that their boss won’t allow it. With morale running low the guards decide to punish Olivia the only way they can. They grab Ian, cart him out of the cell and a few moments two gunshots ring out.

Now hopeless, Olivia lies on the floor for days on end until a team of American soldiers infiltrate the facility with none other than Jake there to rescue her. She wakes up in sunny Vermont where she takes a steamy shower with Fitz. Fitz is the mayor of a small town with Tom as his personal detail. ‘You shouldn’t be here.’ ‘You asked me to come.’ Olivia takes their dog for a walk when Abby stops her. She explains that none of this makes sense between Fitz resigning or the disappearance of the First Family, Huck or Jake. ‘No one is going to help you.’ At the end of the conversation Olivia finds an object on the ground, takes it home and after a surprise visit from Tom she wakes up in the cell again.

The newly determined Olivia removes the other half of her bra and calls out for a washroom visit. She arrives to find that the window has been bricked over causing her to break down into tears on the floor. Sitting on the ground she notices the same object from her dream attached under the sink. She removes it allowing her to detach one of the pipes and hits the guard with it. Olivia takes his keys and gun and bolts down the hall towards the exit. ‘Are we gladiators or are we bitches?’ Olivia can taste freedom when the other guard enters the hall between her and the door. She raises the gun at him, but he says she doesn’t have the guts to pull the trigger. Apparently she does and bang the guard falls to the floor. She gets to the exit and after finding the right key escapes. Hooray! But wait, what?

The street outside is on a projector and the sounds are coming from speakers. The facility she was in is a stage built in a giant warehouse. A man walks over who is realized to be Ian the journalist. He knew the only way to break her would be through her need to save everyone which allowed him to obtain information about the President from her. Apparently he has plans for her. The disheveled Olivia walks back towards her prison and the doors shut behind her. Dam you Ian!

What questions did this episode answer:

  • Apparently Olivia is in some warehouse, most likely still in the United States.
  • Her captor is this mysterious Ian character.

What questions does this episode leave us with:

  • What does Ian want with Olivia and the President?
  • How long has Olivia been gone?
  • What will Fitz do when he learns that Olivia is missing? Perhaps he’ll have a… fit? (I’m scolding myself for this don’t worry)

What did you think of “Run”? Was it everything you wanted? Did you expect this to be where Olivia was taken? What was your first impression of Ian? Let me know in the comments below!
