Rizzoli and Isles 5×13 ‘Bridge to Tomorrow’: Just keep swimming..

Rizzoli and Isles: TNT

Rizzoli and Isles returned this Tuesday with its winter premiere, the second half of season 5. Our two favorite ladies are back, ready to solve crimes and catch bad guys. Or are they? In the summer finale, we were struck with a cliffhanger – Jane leapt off a bridge down into the water, leaving Maura screaming for her. Is the fiery Italian detective okay, or has poor Maura lost her best friend? I guess that’s for us to find out.

Well, first off, this is Rizzoli AND Isles, so I highly doubt Jane won’t be returning. However, the episode begins with Maura, Frankie, and Korsak all out looking for their friend. Jane and the man she had jumped in after have been swept downstream, and are now nowhere to be found. Of course, everyone is assuming the worst. Wouldn’t you be if it was possible that you had witnessed your best friend’s death?

While Frankie and Maura stay at the pier, Korsak goes to look for the suspect’s wife. She’s more angry that he was disloyal to her than the fact that he might be dead, much to the detective’s surprise. But when Korsak gets a call indicating that they might have found Jane, he’s out of there in seconds, ready to go rescue his friend. And sure enough, Jane shows up, brought in by a fishing boat. Sure, she looks like a drowned cat, but she’s alright. That’s what everyone is happy about. Well, it’s what everyone should be happy about. Maura doesn’t seem so peachy; she hugs Jane and then moodily struts back to the precinct, leaving her friend sopping wet and wrapped up in a blanket on the pier. Meanwhile, Jane goes home and sulks on the couch, while Angela waits on her and tries to convince her that Maura’s just scared and hurt. Jane is just trying to convince her that her own mother should be more scared for her since she, you know, almost died and all.

The next day, when Maura and Jane meet at the precinct, Maura is just as withdrawn and reserved as she was before, even after Jane gives her an “I’m sorry” gift. She then tries to explain to her friend why she did what she did, and Maura reveals that she was scared after all. She’s terrified, even, knowing she almost lost the person most important to her. The two make up, for the most part, and go back to work.

Thanks to her own survivor’s guilt, Maura has a new insight on the case, deciding that maybe the killer was just setting Paul up all along. His wife has a solid alibi, so she’s free, but there was that one car that followed Paul and Dani that one night.. Still, the entire precinct is stumped, leaving Jane to go talk to more people while Frankie consults his mother about her upcoming job interview. Maura isn’t doing much work, either, she’s trying to guilt trip Jane into making a bucket list with her. She does have some relevant information to the case, though, that being that with one quick visit to the prison, they might be able to find Dani’s killer.

The case is put on hold for a night, when Vince reveals that he’s bought the Dirty Robber, but they’re right back at it the next morning. Korsak heads over to the prison, where he bribes Mark with books. Mark reveals that he had a penpal who was looking for revenge, which is just what the detective wanted to hear. Maura analyzes the letters, but she finds a friend in the newest member of the BPD instead. It’s the rest of the team who manages to bring Sarah Daniels into custody, although they aren’t too positive it was her after all when they discover that she’s in a wheelchair. But she did lose her wallet, which means maybe they’re on the right track after all. Maura finds a partial fingerprint, leading the detectives to a fundraiser Paul was at. His wife was at the fundraiser, too, and the fact that it was just her computer at home, not her, makes her the prime suspect for the murder. She could be Sarah Daniels’ sister, they went to the same therapist, and she rented the same kind of car that was stalking Paul, so the case is pretty much wrapped up. Carol admits to the murder, the cops rush in to arrest her, but there’s one slight problem. Carol was going to shoot Paul, but the two switch places, and now Paul is pulling the gun on his wife and the police. Jane gets him to put it down, though, and all is well. Carol is taken off to jail, and while Paul still cheated, he is a free man.

Angela didn’t get the job after all, but she has Frankie on board to help her look for a new one. Jane goes over to Maura’s, where her best friend presents her with a gift – a pasta maker all of her very own. The two are reunited, ready to make fun of each other once again.
