Pretty Little Liars 7×01 Tick Tock Bitches “The Bell tolls for Hanna”

unspecified-1

Well we started off with quite a bang. The girls, minus Hanna, are digging a grave, tears streaming down their faces. Please tell me it’s not for Hanna. NOT HANNA! PS Was I the only one that forgot Hanna was kidnapped last season? It was a long hiatus for me.

This show has gotten a little too unrealistic for my tastes. What’s with the dolls? When A was revealed to be Charlotte the dolls kind of made sense because she never really had a childhood. She used the dolls as a substitute for her sister and for friends she didn’t have. But what is this A’s excuse? For me the dolls just distract from the mature nature this show has developed. I have loved how the show has grown with its audience. It went from PG to bordering on R given all the sex scenes, and the underwear attire the past season has produced. Not to mention all the murder and dead bodies. When the gang saw Hanna hanging from that bell my heart jumped into my throat, I thought “they can’t possibly kill off Hanna Marin!” It was a great suspenseful scene that was completely undercut by the reveal that the body was just a doll with a freakishly accurate Hanna mask. How is that realistic? A random blonde girl in Hanna’s clothes would have made more sense. It would have made it even creepier if you knew that A was capable of murdering a random, innocent person, just to further their game. How do you explain who made that mask? It was flawless. Even though it was a dark bell tower and the group could have clearly missed any imperfections in the mask, that doesn’t solve the problem of the audience being let down. With all of the new mature themes, and the darker more adult storylines the show has taken on, to revert back to something childish like this just brings me out of the story. My first thought at seeing the doll is how stupid it is.

Not only has the show been jumping back and forth between childish and mature themes, but it has also become fairly hard to follow, especially with all of the breaks in between seasons. I know that for some viewers that’s half the fun. It is like we are solving these mysteries along with the characters. But I don’t have time to keep a detailed time line of the events that happen in Rosewood. The flashback scenes of Emison (Emily and Alison for those of you not on the ship) for example completely threw me. I could not for the life of me remember when they had last been making out in a bed. I had to search up the scene on YouTube and discovered it was from season 5 episode 5. That is almost two whole season’s ago. To a more devoted fan, this wouldn’t have mattered because they probably remembered exactly when the kiss happened. But to a casual fan or someone that multitasks while watching TV (like myself on occasion) they may have missed the connection completely. Having the storylines get too complicated may drive away viewers who can’t keep up. I’m not sure if I would have lasted this long if I hadn’t been covering the show. I suppose with only this season left the writer’s are more concerned with writing a great story and pleasing their die hard fans, than with gathering or maintaining a new fan base.

Speaking of Emison, is it not bothering anyone else that all of the main couples are somehow finding their way back to each other? Don’t get me wrong; I love Ezra and Aria, Spencer and Toby and Hanna and Caleb. But doesn’t anyone think it is a little unrealistic that all three couples broke up only to get back together in the last season? Ezria has already slept together, Haleb has kissed, now we are just waiting for Spencer and Toby to randomly fall into bed. Which could happen any day now since they are paired up an awful lot during their A shenanigans. When you think about it even Emily and Alison were a main couple. Alison has been the only constant in Emily’s love life. Between all the girlfriends, Alison has always been the one to come back to Emily’s mind and the one Emily has never been able to let go of. With Alison’s husband being a crazy evil British imposter perhaps Emison will be endgame along with Ezria, Haleb and Spoby. I wouldn’t mind. I just wish at least one of the couples could have stayed together through the time jump so that it would be a little more realistic than three separate couples breaking up and getting back together all at the same time.

Although I have had my annoyances with this show, I am quite excited to see where the writer’s take us over the next season. Perhaps at the end of the series everything will make sense, all questions will be answered and I will be able to let go of all of the things that irked me. I am going into this season with an open mind and an optimistic attitude, please Marlene don’t let me down.
