Pretty Little Liars 6×11 ‘Of Late I Think of Rosewood’ And Thank God I’m Not There.

With the Liars returning to Rosewood you better believe there will be drama, heartbreak, and murder. Oh and a whole lot of drinking since they are all over 21 now! Woohoo!

Since the series jumped into the future 5 years most of the episode was spent explain where the girls are now, what they are doing and whom they are doing it with. They all seem to have ended up in careers that you would expect, except for Alison and Emily. Another big shocker is that Hanna is engaged! And not to Caleb but some guy named Jordan. Haleb is over! Aria is dating a guy named Liam. Oh no, Ezria is done too! Probably not for long considering the way the couples are all like magnets on this show. However Spencer may provide a bit of a speed bump to Haleb. It is unclear what is going on between Spencer and Caleb but what is clear is that they have become awfully close. It was mentioned a few times how Caleb “saw Spencer in Washington”. Caleb also mentions that Spencer called him to tell him about Charlotte’s death. And of course when Hanna offers for Caleb to stay in her mom’s newly renovated Sanitarium themed hotel he explains that he doesn’t need a room because guess where he’s staying? Oh right, in Spencer’s barn of course! All signs point to Spencer and Caleb sleeping together. Which is just weird and wrong to me, but perhaps they have just become good friends. Although with the way Spencer kissed every male she bumped into last season I very much doubt that.

It’s not much of a shocker to find out that Toby and Spencer are no longer together as well. However it looks like there could be a romantic rekindling in store for them. When Spencer visits him at the site of the house he is building she asks him whom he is building it for. Toby seems shocked until she explains that ‘she knows him’. When she says this a look of sadness flashes over Toby’s face and then he slightly smiles to himself. Later we find out what Spencer meant by this comment was that she believes Toby is building a house for a girl, “All I got was a chair, some lucky girl is going to get an entire house.” I think that Toby is still pining for Spencer, pulling some Notebook type thing and building the house he always thought he would build for her. Why else would he look so sad when she brought up the idea of him building it ‘for someone’? Perhaps Toby wants to create a happy reason for Spencer to want to stay in Rosewood with him. He knows that everywhere she looks in that town she sees bad memories, so maybe if he builds a brand new place for her to make new memories in she will want to stay. Although I don’t know how he’ll feel once he finds out his best friend and his best girl are hooking up.

I think the time jump was a great idea that breathes life back into a show that frankly, was becoming a little stale. I only wish that it could have happened sooner. With only another season and a half to go until the series ends I don’t know how they expect to fit all of these new story lines and character arcs into the time they have left and it won’t end up rushed. They dragged out the A/Charles/CeCe story line enough; I hope this new mystery will get enough time to be explored. What I find very intriguing is that although it is the same show it feels like they are starting over, hitting rewind and telling the story of a murder once again but with a different twist. Charlotte’s funeral paralleled Alison’s from season 1 so closely. From the four girls sitting front row, to Sarah Harvey making an entrance wearing a black veil (only this time we can see that it is her underneath), to the big mystery being revealed as the girls stand outside the church. The girls have matured and are effectively different people than they were at sixteen, which will change the story and how it develops. This story also has a different antagonist. By keeping the plot close to the original but changing a few key aspects it makes for a very intriguing show.

Now that some time has passed since we last saw the liars it appears that there are a few secrets they have been keeping. Not only will we be uncovering who our new big bad is, who exactly murdered Charlotte, but we will also get to dig up the new skeletons the girls have buried in their time away from us. The most obvious being the pills Emily seems to be hiding from her BFF’s. My first thought is obviously that she has developed some time of drug addiction. Why else would you have a terrified look on your face when your pill bottle drops out of your purse in view of your friends? However perhaps everything isn’t quite as it seems. These could be prescription, maybe anti-depressants to help her cope with the death of her father, or possibly some medication to help combat PTSD she has from the Dollhouse. It would be nice to see the show tackle some other serious topics along the same lines as Spencer’s drug addiction instead of focusing on school dances and masked villains. Hopefully with the characters maturing the storyline and our bad guy will too.

As Charlotte spent her youth imprisoned in a mental hospital perhaps the reason she was so focused on childish things such as dolls and dances was because she was never able to have a childhood of her own. Now that we have a new antagonist perhaps the show will have a whole new feel. Our heroines are older, wiser, more jaded and scared, perhaps this will make for a grittier, darker mystery as well.

Oh and I still haven’t forgotten that we never found out who murdered Mrs. DiLaurentis. Has her murderer come back to claim the life of her daughter? Or has someone sought revenge on their masked tormenter? At the funeral we see someone watching the girls from the back seat of a town car, we can only assume that this is the new A. Is this person the same person who murdered Charlotte? If so there are a few people we can cross out. Sarah Harvey was shown being driven off in the front seat of a car, unless she got out and climbed into the back seat and told the driver to turn around I don’t think it’s her. Mona stormed off after everyone exited the Church, I suppose she could have gotten into a waiting town car to spy on the liars, but the fact an emphasis was put on her leaving suggests they wanted us to know where she was. Caleb went ‘to get the car’ which implies he would be driving it, making me think it is unlikely he would be in the back seat of any car. This leaves a few of our main cast unaccounted for; Ezra, Toby, and all of the parents of the liars. With a brand new suspect pool I am eager to start unraveling this mystery. As you can tell my brain is already narrowing down suspects and motives. Although by the looks of the next episode the writer’s aim to make it quite the rollercoaster.
