Portlandia 05×3 ‘Healthcare’: “This reminds me of the time when I got trapped in a water bed.”

Yay! Toni and Candace from Women and Women First make their season five debut this episode! Peter and Nancy are also there to say “and, and, and, and” over and over again. In the cold open! Love them! This season has been quite different so far in its overall set up. The sketches are all interconnected and telling a bigger story than ever before. I’m diggin’ it. So, what sketches to we have this episode?

This episode focuses mainly on healthcare issues, duh, and it’s plenty hilarious. Candice from Women and Women First finds out she’s having multiple heart attacks a day. When the doctor suggests she exercise, she says she doesn’t believe in exorcisms. Then he signs her up for a swim class where she almost gets sucked away by a hose. So when she decides to no longer exercise, the doctor tells her she needs to get a heart transplant so she’s chill with that. Whenever the doctor brings her a heart she refuses that because it’s a man’s heart. Then the doctor decides to bring her in on an animal heart option that’s still experimental with no EPA approval. Candace ops in for the surgery and gets a monkey heart transplant which then leads her to craving bananas and making monkey noises. What a weird ending.

Peter and Nancy have been feeling sleepy lately and they decide to go to the doctor. The doctor tells Peter he has cancer and they decide to look for healthier alternatives. Someone stops them on a street and tells them that raw milk is the best possible alternative and they run with it. Suddenly they have an abundance of energy and they decide to spread the gospel of raw milk. This leads them to handing out free samples in a hospital until a doctor played by Ed Begley Jr. chases them out. Then they take their revolution to the streets until some cops show up and bust them for selling raw milk. The next day, Nance decides to fly to Chernobyl so she can get sick with cancer too like Peter. She’s feeling bas because she couldn’t get all of his Make-a-Wish foundation requests approved like Peter meeting Michael Jordan. But Peter follows her to Chernobyl and convinces her she doesn’t have to be sick. He goes skydiving with Brigette Nielsen, another one of his lifetime goals, and they head home to make use of the forty something years they have left together.

Gotta love Portlandia. Finding a way to spoof the health-conscience residents of their fair city while still lovingly jabbing at our horribly broken healthcare system. Very nice. What did you guys think of this episode? I really liked it. Tell me in the comments below!

Sarah S. is an aspiring couch potato and currently haunts the Midwestern United States. She spends way too much time watching TV and being a pop culture junkie. When she’s not ranting about movies and TV on social media, you can probably find her with an iced latte in hand or fixing everyone’s problems. Sometimes she writes really silly stuff on Twitter and Tumblr.
