Person of Interest 4×22 ‘YHWH’: Thank you for creating me

POI 4x22.1

So much happened in Person of Interest‘s season finale. From shoot-outs to scavenger hunts, Team Machine was all over the place in this one with one storyline ending and two others continuing on to what should hopefully not be a shortened fifth season. Enough talk, let’s jump into “YHWH.”

The Darkest Hour

With last episode’s cliffhanger Finch and Root are on their way to protect The Machine from Samaritan. Following instructions given to them from the Machine, Root and Finch travel around the city picking up laptops, cables, bags of ice, night-seeing goggles and a program creator by a friend of Finch’s. They are called by Reese who needs their help, but Root tells Finch that The Machine will protect John as she needs him. After Reese is freed, he finds Root and Finch at an electrical substation where The Machine is located. Apparently they can download her core data to rebuild her later.

Root and Finch enter the facility to start the download while Reese stands guard outside taking down tons of Samaritan operatives. While Finch downloads his creation to save her, she reaches out to him. “Father, I am sorry. I failed. I didn’t know how to win. I had to invent new rules. I thought you would want me to stay alive. Now, you are not sure. If you think I have lost my way, then maybe I should die.” This scene shows how Finch’s opinion of his creation has changed, especially when Finch says:  “You are my creation; I can’t let you die.”

The Final Showdown

Meanwhile Reese, Fusco and Elias are still captured by Dominic who is ready to wipe out the competition and use Team Machine as his underlings. When Rose hears of Dominic’s plan she turns on him, freeing Fusco, but in the process is captured. This enrages Dominic prompting him to give Reese the ultimatum of calling Finch or Rose and Elias will die. With Finch on his own quest Reese is alone. Then suddenly a fax comes in to Dominic’s lair saying “Knee cap bust it, glass jaw, cut ties.” Dominic has no idea what it means, but Reese does. It’s The Machine fighting back.

Reese uses the information to take down one of the guards then proceeds to take out each thug with the help of The Machine. Dominic attempts to make a run for it, but Fusco and some NYPD officers show up to arrest both him and Elias while Reese leaves to aid Finch and Root. While Fusco’s transport is bringing both crime bosses to the precinct, they are T-boned by Elias’ men. They rescue Elias, but before they can escape Dominic emerges and holds his adversary at gunpoint. As he is about to win his war, Fusco appears gun draw.

The Correction

Back in DC, Control believes that Samaritan is planning a terrorist attack on American soil prompting her to meet with Senator Garrison about her concerns. He rejects her crazy opinion, but Control secretly clones his phone. She uses it to set a meeting with Greer and when he shows up she surprises him and takes him hostage. Greer admits that Samaritan has been monitoring human behaviour to make corrections in society. Instead of a mass genocide, Samaritan believed only key individuals needed to be removed. As Greer explains this to Control, the disloyal and key individuals are taken out: Shelley the ‘school teacher’, Grice, even Dominic and Elias are gunned down in anti-climactic fashion. Control is stunned to hear this, giving Greer enough time to call in his men to take her away.

The season ends with Reese, Root and Finch running off with The Machine safely stored in an electronic briefcase, hoping that they can avoid Samaritan’s ever watchful eye.

Right off the bat I will say that there was A LOT of action in this episode. And it did not detract from the dialogue, which is always a pain in action-packed episodes. The story with Control is certainly interesting and one I hope to see more of in next season, but I was so disappointed with how the feud between Dominic and Elias ended. They were both really great characters and yet their final standoff was so…. meh? I really hope the writers did not throw that in there because they had no idea how to conclude the feud. Next season should be interesting seeing how Team Machine fights back with even less resources than last time. Let’s just all hope and pray that Person of Interest gets a full season order!

Questions

  • Where is Shaw?
  • If The Machine is resurrected will it behave differently?
  • What is Greer’s plan for Control?
  • Are their identities compromised?
