Person of Interest 4×21 ‘Asylum’: You are not interchangeable

POI 4x21.1

The slow build up to this season’s finale sped up in this week’s Person of Interest when both storylines came out in full force. This episode has no real POI, but instead brings us back into both main conflicts of this season. While Elias and Dominic are fighting for title of King of New York, Root and Finch follow a lead to the possible whereabouts of Shaw. This episode is action-packed from start to finish, let’s jump into “Asylum.”

His Final Stand

The numbers this week are Dominic and Elias which means it is about to go down. The Brotherhood is able to catch Elias along with Reese and Fusco who just so happened to be visiting Elias. Instead of killing the current King of New York, Dominic decides to question Elias about his relationship with Team Machine. How did he find out about that? Well turns out Harper switched sides yet again and gave Dominic info about Finch. Cue the montage of various torture techniques trying to get Elias, Reese and Fusco to talk.

Dominic continues to try and find answers when he discovers a mole in his organization has been helping Elias get information. Elias gives him the mole’s bank account number which ends up being Link, who Dominic shoots on the spot. Then comes that gratifying laugh from Elias’ mouth. Turns out he knew Dominic was coming and planted evidence to frame Link so Dominic would kill his right hand just like Dominic did to Elias with Anthony in “The Devil You Know.” This story ends with Elias, Reese and Fusco still in the custody of a very enraged Dominic. Uh oh.

Who is in Control?

Control also returned this week and she was back with a vengeance. She kidnaps and interrogates a schoolteacher named Shelley whom Control believes is a handler for Samaritan agents that are working for the ISA. After throwing evidence after evidence at her, Shelley finally drops her persona with this juicy line: “You have no idea what’s coming for you, bitch.” After that Shelley praises Samaritan like a god, telling Control to stop prying or she will become part of The Correction, a program bent on cleaning the world of unnecessary people to create a super utopia ruled by an artificial intelligence. So basically we were so focused on Samaritan’s plans for Team Machine that we totally forgot to think about a self-aware super computer wanting to restart human civilization under its own parameters. Oh joy.

Where is the Machine?

Now the quest of Root and Finch. Seems like they are back on good terms after their recent fallout, but that’s because they are searching for the same things: Shaw. Root discovers the truth about Shaw when she calls abruptly, prompting Root to spring into action. Regardless of the imminent trap she wanted to save her Sameen. This leads to Root and Finch going undercover at the Steiner Psychiatric Institute where Shaw was held only to discover that they were actually inside Samaritan headquarters.

This ends in the capture of Root and Finch. Greer and Martine reveal that Root’s earpiece is the way to discover the Machine’s location and therefore need to crack her head open. Martine mocks Root about Shaw’s weakness, but Root gets the last laugh when she snaps Martine’s neck. YES. Just as Greer’s henchmen are going to crack her head open the Machine intervenes and engages in a standoff with Samaritan. Samaritan agrees to let Root and Finch go if the Machine reveals where it is. This is not good.

This episode was hands down the best episode in weeks. After a lot of somewhat formulaic and predictable POIs, we are finally thrust into the stories we were supposed to care about this season. Not to mention who doesn’t like the return of Elias? The standoff between the Machine and Samaritan was suspenseful and the perfect lead up to a hopefully eventual end to the Samaritan story.  The survival and self-sacrifice this season has been prominent and hopefully the Machine has shown enough humility to regain Finch’s trust.

Questions

  • Who will win between Elias and Dominic?
  • Will the Machine escape the grasp of Samaritan?
  • Did Shaw cave under torture?
  • What is Control’s plan?
