Person of Interest 4×16 ‘Blunt’: Recruitment

POI 4x16.1

After focusing on Samaritan for a while, Person of Interest is back to the grittier, darker side of New York in the battle of the mafias. However, this time the story follows only one side of the rivalry. Reese and Finch attempt to protect this week’s number after she steals money from one of Dominic’s operations. These back to basic episodes depend on the intrigue of the weekly POI numbers, and characters like this week’s leave us wondering if we may see them return to help Team Machine in their final showdown with Samaritan. Let’s jump into “Blunt.”

This episode’s POI is Harper (Annie Ilonzeh, Arrow), a grifter who is targeted by our favourite new baddy Dominic after she steals money from one of his legalized marijuana dispensaries. Harper’s actions cause Dominic’s men to be killed by the Parral Cartel prompting Dominic to track down her boyfriend Trey. Reese contacts Dominic offering to return the money for Trey and Harper’s life. They meet in a diner and discuss how Elias seems to get out of trouble. Reese tells Dominic that Elias stays out of their way and Dominic could as well if he did not attack innocent civilians. Harper visits the Parral Cartel and tells them about Dominic’s money laundering operation, using them as a distraction while Reese rescues Trey. Fusco arrives and arrests the Parral Cartel and Dominic’s crew, but Dominic is released when he reveals documents showing his gun are used for his private security company. Dominic approaches Harper in an attempt to recruit her, but she declines. She apologizes to Trey, breaking up with him in the process.

Meanwhile the secondary storyline is significant yet near nonexistent. Root sells an app that she and The Machine developed, giving her access to a software development company that they could use to potentially rival Decima and Samaritan. As I said, not much happened here. All in all this episode was the typical season one Reese and Finch vigilante story minus the police hunting them. Dominic gets better and better the more we see him, showing how brilliantly evil he is. The diner scene was by far the best in recent memory, such dramatic tension! The lack of Elias was a bummer as I enjoy every performance by Enrico Colantoni, but I am sure he will be back soon. These past few episodes feel like filler, but expect a barrage of drama and action as both the Samaritan/Machine and the Elias/Dominic conflicts either come to their end or set up a fist-clenching cliffhanger. I apologize for the abrupt recap as these on-again off-again airings really screw with my schedule.

Questions to ask:

  • What is Root’s plan at the software company?
  • When will Shaw return? What is Greer’s plan for her? What will Team Machine’s reaction be?
  • Will Harper return in a later episode? Whose side will she be on?
  • Who will win between Elias and Dominic? Both are great characters, hate to see one of them go.
