Penny Dreadful 2×10 ‘And They Were Enemies’: I know what I am

Source: Showtime

Penny Dreadful’s finale episode seems to have come very quickly although there was little to no urgency throughout the season. The main conflict was wrapped up within the first 20 minutes and the rest of the episode was spent building up to season 3. It was bizarre, heartbreaking and yet hopeful.

Vanessa faces off with the devil in the guise of her fetish, which was a disturbing scene to say the least. She somehow out-devils the devil, who calls her Amunet. It’s interesting to note that we have only experienced the devil via Vanessa. After she destroys her fetish, Evelyn’s beauty and youth is stripped away. At the same time, Sir Malcolm and Victor are still dealing with the ghosts of their past. They are urging them to kill themselves. The thing about Penny Dreadful is that, it’s incredibly intense, but most of the struggle is internal so the climax isn’t reflected visually. All their plot obstacles like the nightcomers and vampires, they only serve to force the characters to reflect on their own sins.

Sembene’s dead and Ethan has gone full Wolfman. Hecate releases him from the staircase and he swiftly kills Evelyn. He and Vanessa have a moment but he runs away. Quite frankly I’m most confused by Ethan’s reaction. Vanessa knows what he is and still accepts him. I’m not saying he should definitely stay, but his decision to confess and be executed was a little too swift for me to understand. He ends up being sent back to America in a cage.

John Clare has escaped the Putneys without any problems. I thought he would be driven to Lily’s cause but it appears that he is less vengeful than I thought, despite his vitriol against Victor. He shares a sweet moment with Vanessa and ends up on a ship as well. I will miss their interaction.

Lily and Dorian have revealed their true monstrous selves to Victor, who is heartbroken and now seeks comfort from drugs. They are really building them up to be the antagonists of next season. Lily is absolutely terrifying, but part of me wonders; how can they possibly top the devil? I guess we’ll have to wait and see. Until then, let me know what you thought of this season in the comments!
