Practically everyone got some on the latest episode of Penny Dreadful. Can you believe Timothy Dalton is 71 years old? Who is the real Dorian Gray? That’s the real secret of the show.

It’s interesting to note that while each character on the show is excellent, we never see a group of them interacting together. It’s as if the whole show was a Renaissance painting and we’re only able to focus on one small aspect at a time. The characters are frequently paired off, evidentially illustrated in the ending’s sex montage. Evelyn finally has her hooks in Sir Malcolm. Evelyn is most definitely a multitasker, seducing Sir Malcolm and driving his wife insane at the same time. The magic these Nightcomers do is absolutely terrifying, yet they’ve somehow managed to make it into a mother-daughter bonding moment.

Dorian and Angelique have their own thing going on. It’s still unclear how this relates to the bigger picture. It’s interesting to note that Dorian performed the act of kindness that was John’s fantasy. Acceptance, I think, was the theme of this week’s episode. They’ve purposely made it so Dorian made love with Angelique no matter the clothes she wears. John’s fantasy, despite his proclivity for romantic poetry, was only for someone to show him kindness. He didn’t get quite what he wanted from Lily, but he received it in the form of dance lessons from Vanessa. Vanessa also explicitly tells Ethan, ‘Whatever you have done, whoever you have made yourself, I’m here to accept you.’

Victor and Lily are really getting to know each other, in the biblical sense. It’s brilliant how they’ve dealt with their relationship. It’s pretty sick, but it’s done so artfully that you forget Lily used to be Brona, and that Victor killed her. Not to mention the fact that he’s basically grooming her into his perfect woman. I expect John and/or Ethan discovering their relationship will be the stressor to major shit going down.

I used to think that Ethan was the dullest character, but he’s really blossomed this season. Josh Hartnett plays him wonderfully. Ethan has chemistry with every single character on the show. With Vanessa he is confidante and carer. With Sembene they are brothers-in-arms. With Ferdinand Lyle he is all wit and charm. The mysteries are infinite with him, and I hope we see a flashback episode for him soon.
