Parenthood 5×07 ‘Speaking of Baggage’: Suitcases are for trips

I can never let my husband watch this episode, lest he might ask me to surprise him at work like Julia did for Joel this week. Lucky for me, he works at the airport and I have no idea what I would do with our 8-month-old son. Speaking of kids, where were Victor and Sydney while all of this was going down? More importantly, where was Julia’s head? That’s a stupid question. Obviously she was thinking about Ed, since she had to guilt-seduce her husband after listening to her crush’s voicemail…twice. I don’t really care to elaborate much on it, but I loved the overarching theme of baggage this week, literal and figurative.

Joel wasn’t the only one getting seduced this week. Even though she said she wasn’t into him earlier this season (I don’t blame her, he looks like he never washes his hair), Natalie snuck into Drew’s room, drunk and looking for an easy hookup, only to ignore him the next day. I feel like this story line is just an easy way to include Drew and I have no idea where they’re going with this storyline. It’s just not very compelling after Amy’s pregnancy and abortion.

Likewise, I’m not too worried about Zeek and Camille. Camille left for Italy on good terms with Zeek, so unless something happens while she’s gone, they’ll be fine when she gets home. Since Camille is such a minor cast member in such a large ensemble, it looks like the trip to Italy is a way to give her a break. I absolutely hate seeing greenscreen on TV (ABC does it much more than NBC though), so I sure hope they don’t try to include scenes from Italy.

I will be the first to admit that I was wrong about Amber and Ryan’s marriage. She looked so guilty after making up with Sarah last week that I thought for sure that they had already eloped. I think they’re making too big of a deal over Amber and Ryan having a real wedding or not. The bigger deal right now is her flirtationship with Zach, the drummer, which includes building the band’s website.

Last on my list is Sarah and Hank. Obviously, the show runners have kept him around for a reason. I’ve also heard that Mark will be re-entering the picture, so we can assume things will heat up nicely, though I’m so over this love triangle. Unless Max ends up in one of Mark’s classes at school, there’s no way for him to have an organic storyline, which means he’ll be back for one thing and one thing only…Sarah. Meh. Why can’t she just be done with him for good?

What did you think of this week’s episode? Will something happen between Julia and Ed? Will Ryan and Amber’s wedding go off without a hitch?
