Once Upon A Time 4×18 ‘Sympathy for the De Vil’: The author dances

Sympathy for the De Vil

Okay so “Sympathy for the De Vil” was one of the most intense episodes of the season, maybe even of the series. I do not have much sympathy for Cruella before Storybrooke, but she still does get some compassion from me.

Before I get into the main plot of the episode, did you all catch the reference to Maleficent’s daughter who is at the center of next week’s episode? It was explicitly referenced when Malefient questioned Cruella about the fate of Lily. When Cruella responded that she wouldn’t be a great mother, Mal turned into her terrible CGI dragon form. From there, we got to see Cruella use her magic on probably the largest animal that she has ever faced.

The Author showing up at Cruella’s mother’s house was really surprising to me. I didn’t see it coming at all because he’s magic, but it seemed like Cruella lived in the real world. The Author later explained that it’s just a realm frozen in time, but I don’t get it. Cruella and her mother definitely aged in that realm and their didn’t seem to be magic until the Author showed up, so how does it exactly fit in? Is it just a part of the Enchanted Forest that has some sort of time bubble around it? And later on, how did Cruella even get to the Enchanted Forest in the first place? That was something big that wasn’t explained. Didn’t they explain how Ursula got there? Although I think Ursula may have already been in that realm… We need more Cruella.

Except she’s dead. Emma’s heart is growing darker, especially now that she’s murdered someone who was defenseless. Granted Emma didn’t know that Cruella couldn’t kill anyone. I think that it was all a part of the Author’s plan. He knew Cruella wanted to kill him, but since she can’t do it herself, she would try to force someone else to. In turn, Cruella would probably get killed. And she did. I wonder if Emma will feel guilty or not.

Regina is smart. She figured out a way to get around Rumpel’s threat, except now I have a new set of worries. Robin won’t get killed (probably) and Belle’s heart should be in safe hands, but what if someone else gets their hands on the heart? Either Belle could die or it could be an ally of Rumpel that gives him the heart and then he had the advantage again. Like, Emma might be easily controlled by Rumpel with her dark heart and she might convince Regina to give her the heart… At least if Rumpel is in control Belle won’t die… But Robin will. Yikes.

Since Lily has all of Baby Emma’s evil, but Emma has darkness in her heart, they might end up getting along despite what we saw in the promo for next week’s episode “Lily”.
