New Girl 3×21 ‘Big News’: Breaking Up is Hard to Do

Source: FOX

This week’s episode of New Girl had a lot going for it in terms of humor, but still missed the mark with most of the character moments (which has been the case for a good chunk of Season 3). “Big News” followed the events of Jess and Nick’s break up almost immediately after it happened. Nick and Jess decide to tell Schmidt, Winston, and Coach about their break up–only to be derailed by Winston finally being accepted as a police officer. The ex-couple decides to hold off on the news and instead focus on Winston for the day, and of course that doesn’t work out exactly the way they planned and things spiral out of control. Also Schmidt decides to tutor CeCe and help her get her GED?

There was plenty of funny stuff to be found throughout the episode, starting off early with Nick’s Memento moment in the cold open. This was classic Nick Miller and cracked me up. Nick was really firing on all cylinders throughout the episode, with great moments with Tran and honey roasting Winston. Schmidt was also a lot funnier than he has been in awhile this week. His pregnancy rant outside CeCe’s bedroom was hysterical and his reaction to Coach hugging him and kissing him on the forehead was priceless.

Unfortunately, the whole episode wasn’t honey roasted. A lot of stuff felt off. For an episode about Winston’s achievements, he was hardly in it at all (and when he was in it, he had nothing to do). It would be nice for the writers to show us at least one reason why Winston might make a competent cop, but they haven’t and it’s endlessly frustrating. Who in their right mind would hire this man to serve and protect? I know it’s a sitcom and that requires some suspension of disbelief, but New Girl has always had at least some realism to it. This Winston cop thing is completely ridiculous. Is there any worse written character on TV than Winston?

The episode never really worked for me completely. CeCe’s plot with Schmidt seemed like a total afterthought and never materialized into anything important. The “Honey Roast” was flimsy at best and a really ridiculous plot point. Thankfully, Jess roasting Nick was marvelous. My favorite line of the entire night was Jess saying “Nick yells Yahtzee! when he climaxes!” The scene had some genuinely funny and heartfelt touches at the end when the gang drunkenly held hands with Nick and Jess… but then it all floundered with the closing scene between Nick and Jess. It was awkward and off-putting for me. If the writers plan on getting them back together (which of course they do), I wish they would either get to the point or break them apart completely. This in-between stuff is very strange.

As New Girl approaches the end of its third season, one might expect more hanging in the balance than there is now. Last week’s episode (with the Nick/Jess break up) felt like it should have been the season finale… and yet we still have more episodes coming. I’m curious to see what the writers have planned for the remaining episodes, but I’d be lying if I said i was very excited.

What did you think of this week’s episode?
