Modern Family 5×05 ‘The Late Show’: Patience is not a virtue

“The Late Show” centers around a reservation Jay made for the adults of the family at a very fancy upscale restaurant, that he’s been waiting 6 weeks for. He’s practicing having more patience with Gloria since she takes forever to get ready and consistently makes him late for everything. However, his patience is short lived and he ends up snapping at her, causing them to be the first to arrive. Claire has been working an obscene amount at her father’s company so Phil buys a fancy suit and wants to treat her to a nice night. Except the suit clerk sold him a super tight hipster suit because Phil wanted something “in style”. The entire episode Phil is struggling with the suit and it’s quite hilarious especially since everyone can relate to his predicament at one time or another.

Meanwhile over at Cameron and Mitchell’s, Alex is babysitting Lily and tries to read her Little Women but Lily just wants to play dolls and put makeup on Alex.  Mitchell  struggles with the same problem as Jay; Cameron taking forever to get ready however their problems go deeper than that once they both show up in the same suit.  Even though I’m still not 100% sold on Aubrey Anderson Emmon’s acting, she’s got some great lines in the episode.

What I really loved about this episode is every member of the cast is involved in the story, no characters are used solely for pun purposes (except maybe Haley….poor thing she needs a purpose). It’s a classic Modern Family episode: one member of the relationship is trying to do something good for the other but it doesn’t work out in their favor resulting in comedic scenarios and then the layers are revealed later on: Gloria enjoys being late because she likes to make an entrance, she likes the feeling of being doted on when she arrives. Claire being the controlling nut she is, doesn’t know how to let go and let Phil be a more dominant presence in the decision making process when it comes to the children. Cameron has different ways of manipulating Mitchell in order to get his way and this time Mitchell isn’t giving in. The only negative thing I have to say about this episode is it feels like Cam and Mitchell didn’t get the “happy ending” that the other couples got. Their relationship was more like brothers playing tricks on each other than a couple who resolved an issue.

Gloria sticks up for  Jay when their table is given away. She yells at the hostess about everything he had to put up with only to be denied some fancy cow he had his heart set on eating,  and it reminded me why Jay and Gloria are my favorite couple of Modern Family. The adults end up at a Taco truck, drinking beers, laughing, singing and I couldn’t help but smile because to me, a person who doesn’t  have a family, Modern Family gives me a good insight into what it would be like if I did.
