How to Get Away with Murder 1×13 ‘Mamas Here Now’: A look into Anna Mae’s past

HtGAwM 1x13.1

What a turn of events to lead us into the season finale of How to Get Away with Murder. We got to see why Annalise has Bonnie on her team because she can certainly hold her own in a courtroom. Everything we knew about Annalise was thrown out the window as she comes from a past none of us would have ever suspected. The Guilty Four continue to find themselves increasingly paranoid about the Keating case, but it appears Wes and Laurel might be onto something. It was odd not seeing Hannah given her determination to pin Sam’s death on Annalise, but who can blame them with Cicely Tyson guest starring as Mama Keating herself. Let’s get to it, onto “Mama’s Here Now.”

BONNIE ISN’T ANNALISE, BUT SHE CAN STILL COMMAND THE COURTROOM

The Keating Five take on a new case with Bonnie in lead. Their client Jolene Samuels, a nurse, is accused of raping a patient. During the trial Bonnie accidentally says their client is guilty. ‘Well she’s no Annalise.’ But then Bonnie holds her own, taking down witness after witness. However, one witness reveals Jolene is on a sexual exploit website and she admitted to what happened. Bonnie confronts Jolene about the website, but Jolene says that the victim Chad initiated it. Bonnie wants to find something to show Chad is lying, which enrages the Keating Five, but Bonnie yells at them to do their job. This is when they are introduced to Annalise’s mom.

Connor visits Oliver about the case. Through Oliver’s hacking, they find out Chad is gay through photos posted on a hook up act. Bonnie attempts to bring it up in court, but it doesn’t work. His sexual orientation does not save him from being a victim of rape. Bonnie sits in the office drinking, hopeless over the case when Frank gives her a little motivation talk. Bonnie asks why Frank lied to her about Sam, she can’t look Annalise in the face. Back at the courtroom Bonnie agrees to a settlement with the hospital’s lawyer and the victim. Except BAM she reveals the lawyer Mr Tucker and Chad are lovers, and the money would go straight into a joint bank account. It was a scam all along! The charges against Jolene are dropped. Bonnie comes out to the parking garage where Asher congratulates her, she makes a move and they get physical. Frank sees from his car. UH OH.

ANNALISE OR ANNA MAE?: BATTLE OF THE KEATINGS

With Annalise moping around her room her mother shows up (guest star Cicely Tyson). She starts to throw away Sam’s belongings, complaining about Annalise’s lifestyle changes including her name change from Anna Mae. Wes visits Annalise in her room about Rebecca visiting the detectives, she says stick to the plan before Annalise’s mother kicks him out. After a while Annalise leaves her room, her mom is making food downstairs. She asks with Annalise isn’t working with everyone else. ‘Does it look like I can work?’ Her mother puts her two-cents into the case saying that a woman is not capable of rape. This topic enrages Annalise and she is sick of beating around the bush. She confronts her mom about her uncle Clyde who sexually abused her. Her mom tells her that she knew, and that it happens to everyone. Annalise is sick of that thinking. ‘Go home momma, I don’t need you.’ Annalise’s mom visits her in her room telling Annalise that she is leaving the next day when they have a heart-to-heart. With a new skip in her step Annalise goes to Nate’s trial and talks to him in the interrogation room. He pleated ‘Not Guilty’ prompting Annalise to leave him a note. ‘Fire your lawyer.’ WHAT.

THE GUILTY FOUR DIG DEEPER

Michaela confronts Frank about framing Nate, but he doesn’t reveal anything he may know about Annalise’s plan. Michaela decides to check up on Nate’s case by going undercover as Tammy with the prosecutor for Nate’s trial. The Guilty Four learn that what Rebecca told the cops was different from what she told Wes. Wes goes to the police department to learn about Rudy, he was arrested on drug charges and sent to a psychiatric hospital. Connor invites Oliver out to meet the Guilty Four. Drops the bomb that he has a drug problem to cover their tracks. Wes is called by Rebecca, he tells her he’s busy working. Laurel confronts him, he reveals Rebecca lied about Rudy. Rudy was taken away the same day Lila was murdered. He is second guessing Rebecca’s innocence. Connor and Oliver get home, and Oliver wants him. Connor wants him to be sober. ‘I love you.’ The fandom squeals.

Laurel and Wes go to the hospital where Rudy is to try to speak with him. They fake being married, and with some fake ID they are able to gain access. Michaela sits in on Nate’s trial when Annalise arrives. Michaela feels guilty for it especially due to the fact that he is black. Annalise tells her to leave. Laurel and Wes are brought to Rudy. He has clawed at the wall above his bed just like in his old apartment. Wes shows Rudy a picture of Rebecca and he looks shocked. He keeps repeating ‘wet.’ Wes connects it to the water tank. Cut to someone tracking Wes’ phone to the hospital. It’s Rebecca. ?!?!?!?

What questions did this episode answer:

  • Annalise is not the biggest fan of her mother, especially given her attitude towards Annalise’s past.
  • Bonnie thinks of Asher as more than just a one-night stand.
  • Oliver and Connor are back together.
  • Rudy’s story definitely has something to do with Lila’s murder. The question is how much of it involves Rebecca?

What questions does this episode leave us with for the season finale:

  • Why did Annalise use Nate as her scapegoat? Did she call him the night before to tell him her plan?
  • What is Hannah going to do now that Annalise is going to defend Nate?
  • Will Wes and Laurel’s knowledge foreshadow their demise?
  • Will Frank confront Bonnie or Asher about their relationship?
  • Did Frank find Michaela’s ring in the forest when he planted Sam’s, or is it still out there just waiting to be found?
  • Will Annalise take Bonnie’s advice and save her career by throwing the Guilty Four under the bus?
  • Will Rebecca end up being Lila’s killer? Could she be the scapegoat for both murders?!
