Hawaii Five-0 5×18 ‘Pono Kaulike’: “You’re welcome.”

H50 5x18.1

Last week’s “Kuka’awale” was one of the funniest episodes of Hawaii Five-0 and “Pono Kaulike” does the exact opposite giving us the most tension-filled episode of this season, and potentially one of the best of the entire series. The team faces a barrage of problems when their past actions creep up on them. Danny and Chin are arrested for their actions in the death of Marco Reyes prompting the remainder of the team, with the help of Joe White, to race against the clock to save both team members from their biggest fears: being a cop in prison. No case of the week, but two arrests on the Five-0 team. There’s trouble in paradise in “Pono Kaulike.”

We start with some lighthearted bits, Steve is playing beach football while Danny and Max are at Grace’s school talking about their jobs. Suddenly Steve receives a call from Joe about Danny, saying they need to get him out. As Steve races to the school, Deputy Knox, a US Marshal comes in and arrests Danny for murder. The Five-0 team call one another to keep each other updated when Chin finds Coughlin (guest star Robert Knepper) and arrests him charged with conspiracy to commit murder. Steve arrives at the prison where Danny is, but is denied access even with his badge. Joe picks him up and they race off.

Cut to Danny who is brought to Sam Alexander (guest star, Raphael Sbarge) from the State Department who is extraditing Danny to Colombia for the murder of Marco Reyes. Joe explains to Steve that Reyes was a CIA asset giving them a reason to take down Danny. Joe buys a flash drive from Chinatown with information on Reyes’ work for the CIA including an operation called Sandpiper. Reyes was in charge of a laundering operation for Wall Street. Steve wonders why he wasn’t arrested, but Danny was. Kono tells the skeleton team that Chin was arrested by Coughlin.

Coughlin tells Chin he is done and will be in prison for a long time. There will be no bail. Chin explains the money was for the ransom of Danny’s brother, but Coughlin is not interested in it. The money was still illegal and taken from a cop killer. Chin says he did it for a friend, Coughlin laughs at the idea of helping friends, and Chin smirks saying Coughlin has no friends. Grover says Coughlin most like has Gabriel (guest star, Sean Christopher) as added insurance in the case against Chin.

Sam asks where the money is and Danny reveals they left it at an orphanage. Danny cannot understand why Sam cares so much about Reyes, and he says it is simply murder. Reyes was a CIA asset and Danny interfered. Sam convinces Danny to sign the papers and get on a plane to Colombia. Danny tells Steve to tell Grace that he is okay and Danny is taken away. Coughlin visits Gabriel about him testifying against Chin regarding the money. Gabriel demands a sentence reduction, but Coughlin won’t help a cop killer out of prison. They strike a deal on minimum security. Meanwhile Five-0 plans to tail Coughlin, Kono is concerned that they may have enough on Chin this time, but Steve reassures her.

Steve and Joe confront Alexander after they learn that Reyes screwed up a deal before his death. The CIA was more concerned about their product than Danny so they offered him to the Colombia, but Steve and Joe offer to deliver the cocaine in exchange for Danny’s release. Joe explains that wherever Matt was being held is probably where Reyes’ missing cocaine is. In a brash decision the team decides to rescue Danny from Colombia before Chin from Hawaiian prison. The team flies out to Colombia and burns the cocaine. Steve confronts Alexander and threatens to release the flash drive’s information, including the names of dirty Colombian politicians and Alexander’s ties to Reyes, in exchange for Danny’s safe return. Meanwhile Danny used his one call to tell Grace he loves her instead of arrange protection money. Quite the coincidence that Five-0 made this deal in the midst of Danny’s beating at the hands of the prisoners and guards.

Chin is released as well after Coughlin was killed by Gabriel who managed to escape. Without either of them the case against Chin is gone. Danny explains to Steve that he did not get a lawyer because he knew what he did was wrong, but he protected Steve because he is family. Steve discovers that his mother must have supplied the intelligence, which is why he was not arrested. The episode ends with Chin getting a phone call from Gabriel. “You’re welcome.”
