Hawaii Five-0 5×13 ‘La Poino’: Oh, no! Not the bees!

H50 5x13.1

Dam that was unexpected. Such an intense episode. A patient with a volatile illness is brought to the island by Joe, but a team of kidnappers take the virus carrier. Steve and the team must retrieve the patient before the kidnappers can weaponize the virus. Hawaii Five-0 certainly knows how to ramp up the intensity. Five-0 is on the case in “La Poino.”

WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS

The episode starts with a military plane flying to the island and look who’s on it. Joe! The contents of the plane are shown where a man lays in a quarantined mobile care centre. Steve meets the plane at an airfield where he learns that Mitch Lang, the patient, contracted H5N4 in Manila and that Joe is working private security for this. As they transport Mitch to the hospital Joe says he will finally give Steve some answers. Uh, little too late there Joe. Before Joe can reveal where Steve’s mother is hiding a wrecking ball hits their car. It takes out the rest of the convoy and a team takes the truck with Mitch! Steve gets out of the overturned car and helps Joe. He calls Chin to track the vehicle and heads off on a motorcycle in pursuit. He catches the vehicle, but no one is there and Mitch is gone. Call Homeland! Call CDC!

Danny arrives at the army hospital where Steve and Joe are being treated where he gives Steve a piece of his mind. Meanwhile Chin and Kono investigate the convoy crime scene. Mitch’s location was not public info so how did the kidnappers know? Joe visits Mitch’s family and explains the situation. Max autopsies the gunman Steve shot revealing that he was ex-military raising concern for the reasoning behind Mitch’s kidnapping. DHS informs 5-0 that they were hacked including emails about Mitch’s movement. The virus is very volatile and Mitch will die without a serum. The kidnappers could potentially extract the virus on the island and weaponize it. Uh oh. Cut to the kidnappers who have Mitch on a bee farm still on the island.

Homeland calls and explains the John Doe that Steve killed was a Kosovo terrorist potentially linked to the KLA. Chin finds out that a university professor, Dr. Rennick, bought all the necessary equipment for a virus extraction lab. They head to his house, but are met with resistant as more gunmen are there. A firefight ensues and the gunmen are subdued. They hear banging from upstairs and upon investigating they find the professor’s wife. She recalls that six gunmen took Rennick and the team believes her being alive means he is not done weaponizing the virus. IDs come back on the two gunmen in the house who are both linked Michael Carson, an ex-con and old friend of Joe’s.

Chin and Kono learn from Rennick’s colleague that weaponization would take 12 hours, and would be lethal enough to destroy the modern world. Carson tests the virus’ transmission through bees on an unsuspecting job applicant. The man falls to the ground and starts convulsing. Carson enters to see his work in progress while removing the bees. Meanwhile 5-0 realize that the bees can be used to make the virus airborne so they search for where bees are sold on the island. 5-0 reaches the farm, respirators on and away they go. Chin, Grover and Kono take the barn while Steve, Danny and Joe take the truck. A huge firefight ensues which ends with Carson getting in the truck and Joe chasing after him.

An intense truck fight occurs as the boxes of bees are broken. Joe manages to subdue Carson, but the bees are out. He maniacally drives the car to the closest body of water and plunges it in. Steve gets there as the vehicle is submerged. As he is about to jump in Joe comes up from the water. The CDC rescues Mitch and 5-0 return Dr. Rennick to his wife. Happy music ensues. The Langs visit Joe at quarantine to thank him. Steve arrives shortly after and explains Carson was contracted by a new Middle East group that was targeting DC. They have a heart-to-heart and Joe reveals that Steve’s mother did not check in with her handler, meaning she went off the grid. Joe says he will help find her with Steve and asks him to trust him, which Steve agrees to. But upon reaching his car, Danny brings up a surveillance feed of Joe’s room. Steve you liar! You don’t trust him!

Highlights of the episode:

  • Super intense episode. Period.
  • Joe’s return as it brings up the underlying Steve’s mother storyline. The fact that Steve still doesn’t trust him is believable.
  • So many gunfights.
