Gotham 1×15 ‘The Scarecrow’: Rekindling my fear of men made of straw

Wait a minute: scarecrow…scare…crow. Oh Holy hell, his biggest fear is something that is supposed to be scary! Yay, I get it now!

No wonder Jeepers Creepers, that one episode of Supernatural,  and The Wizard of Oz were so…terrifying.

Basically his fear is fear itself, and that’s all types of poetic. Did anyone else hear crows when the Cranes were having a pow-wow in front of the scarecrow? Yeah, pure poetry.

Anyway, that was the most disturbing of the origin stories so far, and that’s saying something because this show is freaky and creepy as hell. The fear of fear fits the mood though, and even the theme of the episode.

While Johnathan succumbed to his fears, Bruce was trying to grow from his, and  the pain of missing his parents. Yeah kicking some rocks in a rage, falling down a hill and spraining your ankle might not seem a lot compared to the weekly beatings Penguin endures, or the murders, or the basic kookiness of shoving a fear serum into your veins in the hopes of inoculating yourself. But what we have to remember is that Bruce is literally just a boy. Going off alone and getting lost in the woods at night had to be pretty scary.

Then again, Alfred will always be there for him. I love their relationship. Alfred doesn’t baby Bruce. He didn’t go down that hill and carry him back home. He lets Bruce figure out this stuff on his own. Of course Alfred will protect him if there is a threat that he knows Bruce can’t handle, but he also sees that there are things that Master B needs to do by himself, so he can learn and grow.

Speaking of growing, look at you, Penguin. You own your own club and both Don’s don’t expect you to turn on both of them at all, so keep up the good work. You just better change the name of that club soon. Oh, and never bully my baby Nygma again! I like you Penguin, but Ed is precious and as clever, if not more than you. Watch your britches, and hold on to your egg, boy.

And what the hell did Fish get herself into? I think Bullock mentioned that it was about three weeks since the last episode’s events, so what happened to you between that time and ending up in what looks like purgatory? Of course you bounce back incredibly well, and your gift of being a born leader (through any means) really helped. But what happened to that chick’s eyes, and just what is going on?

This storyline is so exciting and mysterious, mostly because Fish doesn’t have an origin outside this show, so we don’t really know what will happen to her besides the fact that she never tussles with Batman. So whatever she is involved with now may or may not be something from DC lore. I’m guessing that it probably is, but we’ll see.

I’m entirely shocked though at the fact that Jim might be the happiest character on the show this episode. I mean his biggest problem (besides the Cranes) was the fact that his girlfriend is working with him and wants to make out at the office. Do you live in a sitcom, Gordon? I’m actually happy that besides Penguin making mild threats, Gordon is sailing a little smooth. That means Barbara will be back any second!

All in all, while this episode wasn’t as intense as I thought it would be it was extremely good, and I especially liked getting an in-depth back story on the Scarecrow, and I hope he makes a reappearance (with that freaky scarecrow) soon.
