I remember hearing about a new show called Glee and I remember being told by my friend that I had to watch it. I distinctly recall watching it for the first time and texting my friend saying ‘Glee = big yes! This will deffo be a thing’ and it was! Six years filled with singing ‘glee’ songs at school, college, university and work and now here we are six seasons later with the final ever episode(s).

2009 was a perfect idea for an episode, a chance to go back from where it all began and remember the show that we all fell in love with. Costume and makeup managed to create pretty believable 6-years-ago characters, especially Berry! We follow the build of from each character prior to joining glee club.

Kurt – After having not made much friend’s Kurt father demands that he joins a club. One of my favourite things about this episode is we see the amazing dad that is Burt before he does any of those amazing things he goes on to do and it just made me smile and think oh Burt just you wait. Kurt meets up with a young Rachel Berry and they awkwardly have dinner together and then she coyly gets him to join the Glee club but before that she has to see what he’s working with – cue duet to ‘Popular’ from Wicked.

Mercedes – I’ve been waiting forever for Mercedes’ story and her voiceover in which she says the only other black kid is boring – poor Matt. Mercedes comes from a church background and needs a platform to boost her dream career. She bumps into Rachel and 2009 Rachel asks to come see her perform at church to suss out the competition. Mercedes slays ‘I’m His Child’ by Zella Jackson Price and let the battle commence.

Tina – Who remembers Goth Tina and her fake stutter? Tina confesses her love for Artie and her desire for him to fully notice her whilst she wants everyone else to find her invisible, which is funny compared to the Tina we know and love now.

Will – Will is bored with this job and decides to re-start the glee club. Principle Figgins is hesitant at first but then agrees to let him do it. Will holds auditions to which only a few apply. Mega-bitch Terri complains about stress and workload and all that jazz forcing Will to quit to become an accountant. That is until (future wife) Emma shows will an old video of him winning nationals that he decides to go through with it – cue instrumental to ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ and lots and lots of tears.

Myself, along with many others was not ready for them to use the original clip of ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ but I think it was the perfect throwback and best way to celebrate the Glee that made us fall in love with the show.

PRESENT DAY.

The New Directions win Nationals with their obviously amazing set list and the superintendent makes Will the new principle and decides to make McKinley a school of Arts.

THREE MONTHS LATER

Will says goodbye to the alumni and new members in the room. He serenades them with ‘Teach Your Children’ and it was the hardest thing to watch especially because you could see that it was more so them than their characters that were saying goodbye and everybody was crying. Mr Schue also announces that Sam will take over the New Directions, which I think was originally meant for Finn but I’m happy with Sam as the replacement.

Mercedes lands a spot being the opening act for Beyoncé, yes Beyoncé. Her exit performance was one of my favourites as she sung to her friends from a distance and then just left without hugging acting as if she’ll see them soon – Mercedes Jones has left the building.

Sue also says goodbye and thank you to Kurt (and Blaine) for helping her learn things about herself that she didn’t expect to learn. It was a very emotional scene and I obviously loved it. Sue then left to find Becky pushing every bystander out of the way.

FIVE YEARS LATER (2020)

Kurt and Blaine have just had a successful run on Broadway and now they’re visiting an elementary school class teaching them to follow their dreams and accept themselves for who they are! It was so weird watching older and well dressed Kurt and Blaine dancing around a classroom – it was surreal and like a proud father moment, I’m not sure how I feel about it.

Rachel is pregnant and married to Jesse St James (I’m also happy with that decision as well, surprisingly) the baby however is Kurt and Blaine and Rachel is carrying it for them as a sincere thank you for all the help they’ve given her which is I think is a perfect example of how far she’s come as a person. She’s getting ready for the TONY awards in which she wins best actress. I was not ready for her speech in which she thanked everyone in her life but dedicated her award to Will Schuester for whom without her award wouldn’t be possible all the tears. Can we also talk about her final solo to Darren Crisis’ ‘Last Time’ and how it was flawless and is on repeat right now.

Sue also publicly opens the ‘Finn Hudson’ auditorium as an ode to Finn and also acknowledges Will’s hard work and dedication he has put into inspiring and changing his students’ lives – go will. Cue final group performance of ‘I Lived’ with nearly every person to grace the stage of Glee coming down the stairs to join in the song. It was the perfect end to a show that we all know and love. The show may be finished but the memories and the songs will remain!
