This has been a great season for Community: Dan Harmon’s triumphant return, farewells to Donald Glover and Chevy Chase, characters like Dean Pelton getting more screen time, the G.I.JEFF Episode, Meow Meow Beans and so on. Community packs so much in to its previous 12 episodes, it left the season finale feeling a little light. Harmon and Co. must feel really confident in a sixth season, because NOTHING about this episode felt like a series finale. Let’s take one last look at season 5 after the jump…
News of Jeff & Britta’s “engagement” hits Annie really hard, harder than I expected. She is still holding on to her feelings for Jeff (and Jeff seems to be carrying around some feelings for Annie too) and she is having trouble adapting to the New Greendale. She wants it go back to the old days, she even hints at missing her original crush Troy. She is really worried about which Greendale she is fighting to save. She may be having a harder time dealing with all these changes than Abed.
Speaking of, Abed spends almost the entire episode basically reassuring us that this will not be the last episode of Community. He constantly makes references to how the show is going to get renewed for what would surely be an epic #SixSeasonsAndAMovie. He goes as far as to directly say so into the camera at the episodes end.
And I can’t wait for next seasons Thursday Night Fix on NBC of Thought Jacker (the Community spin-off), Intensive Karen, Mr. Egypt and Celebrity Beat-Off and Captain Cook. Looks like a real winner of a night for the old peacock network.
All in all it was a fun episode. Chris Elliott as Dean Borchert was a great guest and hopefully he can stick around for a couple episodes next season. Of course the Save Greendale Committee finds a way to stop the sale to subway through their wacky antics. And they even get to wrap things up by dancing around to some classic Dave Matthews Band ‘Ants Marching’.
I agree with most people and believe that Community will get a sixth and probably final season. First off, NBD doesn’t have anything else in the sitcom cupboard other than Parks & Recreation. Secondly a sixth season will put Community at the 100-episode mark and make it ripe for syndication. And finally the show really deserves it. There is still a lot of story to be told at Greendale:
- What ever happened to Troy and Levar on their sail around the world (remember pirates)?
- Will Jeff and Annie be able to address their feelings for each other?
- How will Abed and Rachel’s relationship develop?
- Will Shirley every get a really good episode arc for herself?
- And I really want to learn more about Professors Hickey and Duncan and Dean Pelton
So what do you think, will Community get to its Sixth Season? Did this episode fit as a series or season finale? Do you want to see Jeff end up with Annie, Britta or no one? Please let me know in the comments below, I need something to talk about until the Greendale Gang returns.
