The fall finale leaves a lot of storylines unfinished. Will Burgess and Ruzek ever get married? Are Olinsky and Michelle still crashing at Adam’s place? And what about Linstead? They finally got together and we don’t get any cuddly cuteness. What we do get is a case involving the Mob and one of our own shooting and killing an unarmed man.
We have been seeing Hank Voight’s soft side, but we must never forget the badass Chicago native that is buried beneath his sweet (?) exterior. When a woman’s head is discovered floating in Lake Michigan Lindsay and Voight are dragged into the seedy underbelly of their beautiful city, an underbelly that Hank knows all too well. The floating head leads to a bloated body which points to ‘The Outfit’ a ‘social club’ aka the Chicago Mob. Erin gets concerned considering Voight and his father were both members of their social club. She doesn’t trust that Hank will do the right thing and make the culprit pay for the murder of poor stripper Victoria. After butting heads with him the ENTIRE time Erin should have just trusted her surrogate papa. He seemed to tiptoe the line between The Outfit and the Police. However, by doing this he is able to maintain his position within each. He doesn’t burn any bridges with his less than lawful friends but he also doesn’t let an innocent man go to jail. I think with this case Voight has fallen slightly off the pedestal Lindsay had him on. He explains to her during their post case drink at Molly’s he might not always explain what he does and she might not always agree with it but ‘never forget I love you”.
Sean is still trying to take care of the grieving mother Callie. Her ex has now come back in to town after their son Andrew passed away. Apparently Andrew’s Father Richie is not the nicest guy considering he keeps dropping by Callie’s place to rough her up and take out all of his frustrations about being a deadbeat dad to his real dead son. Sean drags Kim around all shift to track down Richie, only to let him off the hook when Richie admits Roman was a better dad to Andrew than he ever was. Roman takes pity on him and tells him to get out of town and never come back. Dear Richard isn’t a smart man though so of course he heads back to his ex’s to take his frustrations out on her once again. How does he keep getting in to her house? Does she not lock her doors or is she letting him in every time? I don’t want to blame the victim but lady don’t let your crazy ex into your house! Roman and Burgess show up to find her all bloodied which leads to Roman chasing the wife beater down the back alley. He draws his gun, demands Richie stop, and when the man turns towards Roman with a gun in hand Roman fires two shots into his chest. Richie staggers off further down the alley when Roman and Burgess (running out after hearing shots being fired) catch up to Richie they find him dead with a cell phone in hand and no gun in sight. Looks like in the heat of the moment Roman shot an unarmed man. With the mess they have found themselves in what’s the right thing to do? Call Voight “Sergeant, we have a problem”.
What will happen when Chicago PD returns in January? Will Roman have his badge taken away? Will they be hiding a murder? Will Erin ever look at the Voight the same way after tonight? Probably not if she sees the knowledge he has about how to make a body disappear.
