Chicago PD 3×01 ‘Life is Fluid’ Some of us need a little less fluid, if you know what I’m saying

Now that’s what I call a premiere! There is never a dull moment, between the heart racing fight scenes, the breath holding undercover scenes, to the heart warming Linstead moments this episode doesn’t give you time to be bored. Especially since someone gets kidnapped, someone gets shot and murdered and someone gets a little overzealous with a shank.

We are back! The third season kicks off right back in the action. Antonio is bounding up a stairwell to stop a woman from leaping off the roof of a building. Luckily he is able to talk her down and get her to sell out her boyfriend (who she thinks is cheating on her, hence the almost suicide). Turns out he is cheating on her with a man named Derek. Voight is able to use Benji’s boyfriend as leverage to get him to flip on his brother. Unfortunately the grab doesn’t go as planned. Benji gets shot in the head and Halstead gets taken. I bet Erin wishes she had come back when Jay came to her for one final try to get her to come to her senses. I guess she was too messed up to care after partying all night.

It has been 3 weeks since Erin handed in her badge and it looks like she has spent the better part of it in the club doing every illegal substance she can get her hands on. And her mother is no help. She is arguing over prices with drug dealers, asking Erin to lend her money for said drugs, and then giving Erin those drugs. Basically all of the worst things she could be doing. It is only after hearing of the life threatening situation her partner/boyfriend is in that she sobers up enough to make it back in to Intelligence. It takes a little bit to convince Voight to take her back, but since Ruzek is not letting Voight put Burgess undercover he doesn’t have much of a choice but to let Lindsay come back to make the drop.

Like everything in this episode the trade doesn’t go exactly as planned. Lindsay ends up getting taken to drug lord Derek’s mansion where she finally gets to see Jay and make sure he is still breathing. The relief is short lived though when the files Erin brought to trade for Jay are found to be fakes. I was wondering how they realized these were fakes so soon. That’s a lot of information for one man to know. I was expecting it to be revealed that Derek had a dirty cop helping him. Perhaps it will still be revealed, but it seems slightly less likely since I am fairly certain Derek is dead (we didn’t actually see it, but the sound of multiple gun shots leads me to this assumption).

Erin fights for her life and the life of her partner. Repeatedly stabbing Derek’s henchman in the stomach with the knife Al gave her and still having to fight him off when he keeps coming. But after she takes out both bad guys she emerges, covered in blood to the Intelligence team waiting outside, guns drawn. Seems like every time there is a life and death situation the team always shows up after all the action is over. Good thing our cops are so well trained and can take care of themselves. Well, partners can take care of each other.

Now Detective Erin Lindsay is back. How many times will she leave Intelligence just to return the very next episode? However, Voight has some conditions to accepting her back on the team. She must live with him so he can keep an eye on her, she must submit to weekly drug tests and she must have no more contact with Bunny. Bunny is a bad influence and a link to the life that only brings Erin down. She has to severe all ties with her mother in order to move on. All of these conditions are very reasonable and really are for the best. However one of them seems to be giving Erin pause. After everything is said and done, Bunny is still her mother and what child doesn’t want the love and acceptance of their parents. Even if their parents don’t deserve them.

There is a new big bad in town, Eddie. Voight goes to him for information to help get Jay back safe and sound. Apparently he watched Voight’s back when Hank was in jail. He gets out in a month and is wondering if what they talked about is still part of their deal. I love that we are learning more about Hank’s evil past. It’s hard to remember that he was arrested and in jail for a period of time. I want to see that storyline! I hope we can get some flashbacks or something to accompany Eddie’s storyline, because you can bet that this is not the last we
