Burgess has a gun in her face again. The woman just sniffs out trouble. I guess that’s why she’s a cop. But today Roman and Burgess stumble into a whole mess of trouble that ends with Roman bloody and beaten and Burgess having to fight 5 different men for survival.

Apparently Kim has a pretty predictable schedule. She goes to the same diner every morning for breakfast, orders the same meal, and gets creeped on by the same guy. Who chooses today to point out how predictable she is. Burgess fears that she is stuck in a rut and starts to second guess whether or not she did the right thing by turning down the Intelligence offer. That could be the reason that she charges into action when she thinks she sees a man with a gun follow another man into a deserted building. Not the best plan since it ends up with both her and Roman being held at gunpoint and told to throw over their weapons. Uh oh. The bad guy tries to get Roman and Burgess into the building but Roman, thinking fast, pulls the guy back into the building with him effectively closing the door and leaving Burgess safe outside. Now may have been a good time to call for back up, aside from before they walked over, but Burgess is too concerned about Roman and runs around the building until she can find a way in.

Once in the building the drama really starts. Roman has been injured and there are two unknown bodies unconscious on the ground. The bad guy from before and an unknown wounded man. While Kim is trying to help Roman with his bleeding head wound, the guy that forced them into the building comes to and Burgess struggles with him until the other man (I thought he was dead) shoots the bad guy in the head. One down, one to go. Just when you think this wounded man is a victim just like Roman and Burgess he turns the gun on Kim. This is the second time she gets a gun pointed at her. Even after saving her Aubrey (wounded man) refuses to let her or Roman go for fear that he will be sent back to prison. Kim being the wonderful smooth talker she is almost gets her and her partner out the door but Aubrey’s friends arrive. Ok, now it’s three to go.

Aubrey has been shot, his lung has collapsed and he can’t breathe. One of the baddies just wants to shoot him but the other, his cousin pleads for Burgess to help him. So Roman talks her through preforming a procedure to poke a straw through his lung to let out the air. She does it successfully but then jerk-face shoots both Aubrey and his cousin. Ok, 2 more down, one to go. In the scuffle Burgess grabs Roman and disappears into the warehouse. Burgess refuses to leave Roman behind even when they pass an open window that she could easily slip out of and go for help. Instead she ambushes O’Ryan (the baddy), has an epic fight with him on the stairs while Roman clumsily and desperately tries to get to the discarded gun, and then stabs O’Ryan in the neck. Last 1 down. Oh but wait, once Roman and Burgess make it down the stairs and almost to the door another man appears. How many bad guys are there? This time however they just need to avoid a spray of bullets before the man jumps back into his van and ends up driving into a pole. What a day!

This was Burgess’ episode. The whole thing revolved around her and the Intelligence team had the secondary storyline for a change. They were occupied being tazed, which provided some good comedic relief in between the scenes of Burgess fighting for her life and having countless guns aimed at her face. But the whole ordeal wasn’t for nothing, apparently Burgess busted open a smuggling operation and gets a round of applause from the whole precinct and a handshake from her boss. Good Job Burgess! It’s interesting that we don’t really learn anything about what Burgess and Roman walked in on, other than it was a smuggling operation. We have no idea who the men were, why they were fighting, really anything else aside from they were smuggling something. This goes to show even more that this whole episode was meant to focus on Officer Kim Burgess. I don’t think this is what she was aiming for when she was wishing herself out of her rut, but it does the trick. Instead of that boring old oatmeal and orange juice, she loads up on the carbs and the cholesterol, after all she deserves it after the day she had.
