Brooklyn Nine-Nine 2×02 ‘Chocolate Milk’: Embarrassing yourself in front of Derek Jeter

Brooklyn Nine-Nine thrives when it focuses on being a workplace comedy and this week was no different. ‘Chocolate Milk’ saw Jake becoming a ‘friend-friend’ to Terry, Rosa stepping up to help out Boyle as a friend, and Amy stepping back from her teacher’s pet role for just a second.

The star of this episode was Jake and Terry. With Terry’s wife and children (conveniently) out of town and Terry about to get a vasectomy, Jake offers to help Terry out by driving him home from the hospital. Unfortunately once they get there, Terry can’t have the procedure because the hospital doesn’t have a large enough supply to put Terry under anesthesia. This results in High on Meds Terry, which perhaps might be my favorite Terry of all time. When Jake asks him ‘Hey, what do you think of Captain Holt?’, Terry replies, ‘Oh, he needs to smoke some weed.’ PERFECTION. In this altered state, he gropes Jake’s head like a tennis ball and thanks his friend ‘tiny head’ for taking care of him but admits that he doesn’t actually want to go with the procedure. However in the cold light of the next morning, Terry doesn’t remember saying that and tries to go ahead with the procedure while Jake tries to stop him. Pairing Jake with Terry is comedic gold due in no small part to Terry Crews. He uses his physicality superbly, whether it be forcing carrots down Jake’s throat or pining Jake underneath him while he’s sleeping.

The strength of Brookly Nine-Nine has always been the ensemble cast and its pairings, exemplified by Jake and Terry. Still, the rest of the precinct isn’t idle. Captain Holt and Amy prepare for a visit from a deputy chief only to be visited by Holt’s mortal enemy (played by Kyra Sedgwick). Once again Holt’s deadpan is put to great use, particularly in a flashback when we see past!Holt exclaim monotonously ‘I’m sure you can tell I’m quite drunk.’ It takes Amy finally standing up to him and putting him in his place for him to get over his pride and compromise with Deputy Chief Wuntch.

Meanwhile, Boyle tries to convince Rosa and/or Gina to be his guest to his ex-wife’s wedding. Finally, Rosa capitulates and they both don ridiculous Jamaican garb. It’s a cute storyline of Rosa helping out Boyle, I just hope they’re not ramping back up on the Nice Guy Boyle and Too Harsh Rosa pairing. I like them as friends and I hope they keep it that way.
