Brooklyn Nine-Nine 1×20 ‘Fancy Brugdom’: Cantaloupe, yes I can!

20-holt

It’s difficult to pick a favorite character on Brooklyn Nine-Nine. I think my answer changes every week because most of the time each character has some standout moments or lines. This week, Jake takes on the task of being Charles’s best man, Gina, Amy and Terry try to stick to a diet and Captain Holt tries to convince Rosa to apologize to a lower officer.

It’s great to see Jake being so supportive of Charles and all his crazy wedding ideas. And it get even better when Charles brings up that Vivian wants him to retire and move to Ottawa with her. When Charles admits he doesn’t want to retire and move, Jake helps him try to be honest with Vivian. Even though Charles is scared to lose Vivian, he finally confronts her (after unsuccessfully trying to get Jake to do it for him). Vivian takes it well and while they don’t make a decision, they decide to talk about it more. Jake was incredibly patient, supportive and mature with Charles this week. While it’s a little out of character, it’s always nice to see he can step up when he needs to.

Meanwhile Gina, Amy and Terry are all on a diet together where all their ‘meals’ get delivered and consist of such things as a grape, a carrot and an almond. Or a slice of cantaloupe so thin that Terry wants Amy to ‘hold it so it looks bigger in her tiny hand’. Gina is the first to break, going quickly from ‘I’m gonna last forever’ to ‘I gave up SO easy’. When Amy misses ‘cantaloupe time’ with Terry (that song was so perfect), Gina and him find her outside, shame-eating her fourth burger. Reunited with real food, Gina and Amy confront Terry about why he’s even doing this diet anyway when he’s in great shape. He admits he’s doing it in solidarity with his wife, who’s feeling insecure about her body after having twins. Terry is just the sweetest!

Captain Holt is occupied this week trying to convince Rosa to apologize to a lower officer. The officer filed evidence incorrectly and almost cost Rosa months of work, so to ‘thank’ him she gave him a My First Policeman kit. When he files a complaint, Holt works with Rosa on the right intonation for apologizing and ends up burning the pad she wrote an apology letter on because it was so disturbing. After those strategies don’t work, Holt finally tells her he considers her to be a leader, and leaders don’t bully people — they help them get better. I do love how Holt is the dad of the precinct. Rosa relents and offers to help the guy improve his evidence logging skills.

Andre Braugher never fails to make me laugh with his delivery and at a recent SXSW panel hosted by Roku, Melissa Fumero mentioned that she was talking to him about jazz on set recently when he described a specific musician as ‘that dude knew how to f******* play’. Fumero said she couldn’t resist cracking up and Braugher remarked he just didn’t understand how everything he said was so funny. You don’t have to understand it, Braugher, just keep doing it!

On that note, here’s a photo of Melissa Fumero and Stephanie Beatriz during the panel. The ladies discussed how happy they were to be on such a quality, diverse show and were completely charming in person. They even shared that they have a special Santiago-Diaz song! Here’s hoping one day it makes it into an episode.

I’d love to see the Santiago-Diaz song make in appearance in a future ep! *crosses fingers*
