Brooklyn Nine-Nine 1×19 ‘Tactical Village’: Cupcake match

19-featured

Are you tired of me gushing about Brooklyn Nine-Nine yet? Well sorry, because that’s exactly what I’m about to do. I know it’s not the most exciting recap to love on this show every week, but I can’t help the truth! Particularly when the episode features so much Jake and Amy cuteness.

This week, the 99 crew participated in their departmentally-mandated training exercises, or ‘tactical village day’ to Peralta. Jake can’t help but love the competition, since he’s always trying to nab the kid’s karate statue for coolest kill. This year, he’s determined to win it. Terry, always the diligent sergeant, likes tactical village day for the team bonding that goes along with it.

At their site, Amy runs into an ex-boyfriend from another precinct, Teddy, while Jake tries to get into character as Rex Buckingham for the simulation. Jake immediately senses the sparks between Amy and Teddy and decides to focus his time on investigating and butting in to their conversations. I have to admit, jealous Jake is pretty adorable. When Teddy and his team beat the simulation record, Jake suddenly becomes 100% serious about beating the record, and easily does so with the help of Amy by his side and Charles and Rosa backing him up. It’s a good summary of Jake’s character when he says, ‘Man I feel so good! Almost makes me want to take stuff seriously all the time, but then I’m like ‘boobs, farts, boobs, whatever.’

I love that Boyle is the biggest proponent of Jake’s crush on Amy. Usually Boyle is the uncool one to Jake’s coolness. But it’s fun to see the roles reversed when it comes to emotional maturity. Boyle finally tells him why Amy likes Teddy more than Jake — Teddy actually asked Amy out, while Jake didn’t. Jake takes this to heart and comes SO CLOSE to asking Amy out, but loses his nerve when Amy tells him she’s going on another date with Teddy. I’m hoping they drag out this romance a little longer, but I could see Jake and Amy together by the end of the season (which is only two episodes away!).

Meanwhile back at the precinct, Gina gets Holt addicted to Kwazy Cupcake, a very Candy Crush-like game. There were so many great lines from this storyline. To watch the stoic Holt subtly descend into addiction was hilarious, particularly when he started rearranging perps so that he could get a mental cupcake match. I’m really enjoying the Gina-Holt dynamic and I like that she doesn’t let him pull rank and he doesn’t let her get away with too much. It’s very Ron Swanson-April Ludgate-like.

This episode was just chock full of goodness. The Jake and Amy stuff, the Holt addicted to Kwazy Cupcake, everything. In particular, I’m going to need all outtakes of all the unsexy things Jake said in his sexy voice as well as any outtakes of Holt riffing on anything Kwazy Cupake related. And it’s ok Amy, I too get nervous asking my 13 year old cousin for make-up advice because she’s so sexual. What were your favorite lines?
