Brooklyn Nine-Nine 1×17 ‘Full Boyle’: AAGLNYCPDA

17-featured

One of my favorite parts of watching Brooklyn Nine-Nine each week is seeing who they’ll team up next. With so many great characters, it’s fun to watch the pairs change out each week. This time, we had some of my favorite pair ups: Jake and Charles, Amy and Rosa and Gina and Holt.

The main plot dealt with Boyle’s tendency to go ‘full Boyle’ with new romantic partner Vivian. As he recounts his plans for their 20 day anniversary, Jake sees that Boyle is doing his usual too-fast-too-soon procedure that generally ends in heartbreak for Charles. Even though Jake likes to tease Charles a lot, it was sweet to see him go out of his way to protect Charles from himself. They even turn the date into a double date so that Jake can intervene when necessary. So glad they didn’t go through the normal sitcom trope of having Boyle mic’d up while Jake sat in the corner feeding him lines. Boyle gets so worked up that Jake has to send him home, even though Vivian looks increasingly worried about his behavior. Vivian and her friend Bernice are about to leave when Jake catches Boyle trying to come back in, this time with an engagement ring! They have a stand-off in front of a hot dog stand and end up pepper-spraying each other, but Boyle doesn’t get a chance to propose. Jake, in possession of Boyle’s phone, realizes that Vivian has gone ‘full Boyle for Boyle’ and sets up a romantic date in the station, telling Charles to do what feels right. Amy and Jake watch through the mirror as Vivian says yes, and then hurriedly leave when things start getting too steamy. Congrats Boyle!

We discover this episode that Captain Holt is the founder and president of the African-American Gay and Lesbian New York City Police Department Association (AAGLNYCPDA to those in the know) and has some competition for his reelection as president. Holt is nice enough to Officer Brian Jensen when he introduces himself, but as soon as he leaves he tells Gina, ‘Now let’s figure out how to…destroy him.’ Captain Holt is just the best. Gina volunteers as his campaign manager because ‘I was born for politics. I have great hair and I love lying.’ After her suggestions of a dance routine get shot down, Gina very sweetly makes Holt realize that Brian is the future of the organization and shouldn’t be punished for not enduring 25 years of discrimination like Holt did. ‘I thought you created AGLEH–MACA–MACAPA, or whatever, so people like him wouldn’t have to go through what you went through.’

Other stand out moments include tourists not being able to describe the perp because he’s not Caucasian, Jake and Boyle as undercover tourists (‘We’re both Carries!’), any time Rosa and Amy team up is golden, Terry being the parental figure and Gina’s dance troupe. Plus, who doesn’t love a good Canada joke?
