Brooklyn Nine-Nine 1×09 ‘Sal’s Pizza’: It is unwise to give candy to a baby

09-featured

‘Sal’s Pizza’ takes its name from the pizza joint near and dear to Peralta, burnt to a crisp (bada-bing!) in this week’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The episode’s main storyline saw Peralta and Boyle facing off against the firefighters and the fire marshall (guest star Patton Oswalt). However, it was the ensemble cast that really shined for me this week.

According to Jake, Sal’s Pizza is the best pizza joint in the neighborhood (only #8 in Boyle’s email blasts) and when the place burns down, Jake doesn’t trust fire marshall Boone to handle the investigation. Jake and Charles go back and forth with Boone and shenanigans ensue until it comes out that Sal’s Pizza is important to Jake because that’s where his now-absent dad used to take him after little league baseball games. Boone, moved to tears, lets Jake into the case and of course Peralta solves it in seconds. Turns out Sal’s competitor burned the place and stole Sal’s secret sauce recipe.

Nine episodes in, we have a pretty good grasp of Peralta and Holt. Peralta is the goofy genius cop and Holt his stern captain. What we don’t have a grasp on yet is everyone else, but this week got us closer. At the beginning, Boyle was just a general sad-sack, but now we know he’s a bit of a foodie, sending out e-mail blasts that rank the local pizza joints by sauce, crust and even mouth-feel. Just like when Boyle was coaching Rosa, it’s fun to see Boyle have expertise in something and it gives him more of a backbone.

Meanwhile, Diaz and Santiago are filing paperwork when it comes out that Rosa turned down an offer to become captain in Ropesburg, New Jersey. Jealousy immediately kicks in and Amy keeps passive-aggressively bringing it up until an exasperated Rosa takes Amy to Ropesburg and shows her that it is the most boring town in the world, devoid of any real crime. Amy has turned into a bit of a Liz Lemon-type, a bit awkward but endearing all the same. She’s also spectacular at physical comedy. It was nice to see her not only come to terms with her jealousy, but for Rosa to explain that as women in the force they need to have each other’s backs. Women camaraderie makes me so happy!

Back at the station, Terry and Gina are tasked with hiring a new IT director after the department’s computers are hacked and everyone’s search history is revealed. That little plot device was a great way to reveal more about the ensemble, from Amy’s date with a magician to Scully wondering how much fudge is in a calorie. I was delighted to see Gina working with Terry again, as I really loved their interaction last time when she was trying to get Terry recertified to carry a gun. As expected, Terry takes his task very seriously and asks relevant interview questions about job experience while Gina proceeds to floss her teeth, ask about the candidate’s favorite Jay-Z song, and generally act unprofessional. Of course it turns out that there was a method to Gina’s madness, as she reveals that her antics proved that the candidates would never survive working in a police department, where things get downright wacky! I wasn’t Gina’s biggest fan in the beginning of the series, but with more stunts like that she could definitely grow on me.

I really enjoyed the ensemble cast this week, which is impressive considering Patton Oswalt was in this episode. I have no doubts that Brooklyn Nine-Nine will continue to flesh out its characters, and keep on improving.
