Brooklyn Nine-Nine 1×07 ’48 Hours’: If it isn’t Joke Peralta

07-featured

It would be difficult for any episode to follow ‘Halloween’ from a couple of week ago, but ‘48 Hours’ just wasn’t connecting for me. That said, I did like the show overall, but it seriously felt like BNN could do better. Plus I’m beginning to see a theme of Peralta screws something up, and the troops rally together to save his butt while Captain Holt looks on approvingly. While I like that premise, it could get stale quickly.

In this case, Peralta’s screw up is that he arrests a guy with absolutely zero evidence on a Friday and has 48 hours to find some evidence or the station will be liable for a lawsuit. Holt orders everyone on the team to come in and cancel their weekend plans to correct Peralta’s mistake. With everyone angry at him, Jake tries repeatedly to crack the culprit until (with the help of his team) he figures out that the suspect had arranged the entire thing with his former jail cell mate.

The subplots this week were that Gina and Rosa faced off on which restaurant had the best pie, with Charles as the nervous judge, and Terry working 24 hours a day to avoid his bully of a brother-in-law at home. Terry’s storyline was great and he continues to excel at the physical comedy, stifling yawns and falling asleep while doing chin ups. The pie storyline just seemed weird. Why would they fit in a pie judging contest when they’re on such a tight deadline? I wish they had just committed to it a little bit more because I enjoyed seeing Gina and Rosa play off one another, but we only seemed to get a few precious seconds. I also enjoyed that the writers continue to plant the seeds for a possible Jake and Amy romance. They’ve shared just enough scenes and looks that I could see it happening and I am totally on board. Amy Santiago makes the best faces, particularly the ones of disgust towards Jake.

What did you all think? Do you also ‘ship’ Jake and Amy? Do you have any other pairings you’d like to see? Who is your favorite character? Let me know in the comments below.
