Brooklyn Nine-Nine 1×06 ‘Halloween’: I’m a detective! I will detect!

Where do I even begin with Brooklyn Nine-Nine this week? It was so good! We had new characters being paired together and lots of Peralta playing off of Captain Holt in B99’s first-ever Halloween-themed episode. I love watching the writers throw new pairs together each week. I like that they’re not afraid to try new combinations to see what works best, perfect for a new show like B99. Also, is it just me, or are they starting to transition into using their first names most of the time? I’m totally on board with that because I’m always confused what to call them in these recaps.

Anyway, the main plot this week was that Peralta bet Holt that he could steal his medal of valor out of his office by midnight. After many harebrained attempts involving dressing up as a janitor, pigeons and dancing royal babies, it seemed like Peralta wouldn’t be able to break into the safe in Holt’s office. The only other thing in the safe? A sandwich. In the end the plots were one big scheme involving the whole office. Impressed, Holt readily accepts doing all their paperwork and calls Jake an outstanding detective-slash-genius. I could see the whole working-together-as-a-team thing coming, but it was still sweet. Plus, Samberg aced those smaller plots and there was so much Peralta-Holt banter that I was completely charmed.

Charles and Amy (or Boyle and Santiago) are paired up together and tasked with going undercover in costumes to parties to stop any illegal activity. Charles loves Halloween and Amy hates the holiday. Not excited to be there, Amy does a horrible job of being an undercover cop and gets them egged. When Amy mentions disgustingly that she got eggshells in her bra, Jake deliberates whether it’s hot or not. When Amy responds that ‘eggshells in a bra is never hot’, Jake is hilariously immature with his ‘It’s a little hot. Boobs go in bras’ response. Charles is disappointed that Amy hated the assignment so much because he’d (sweetly) hoped they could forge a friendship by facing the bullying on Halloween together. Amy makes it up at the end by getting everyone to dress up in costume (or ‘stume).

Also in this episode, Terry tried to figure out why Rosa was kicked out of Catholic school and Gina had some really great lines. Originally, Terry, Gina and Charles were my least favorite characters but they’ve all really grown on me and the ensemble cast in general is just really strong.

Overall, I was so impressed with this episode. Brooklyn Nine-Nine completely showcased how it earned a full-season order and a spot post-Super Bowl last week. If you’re not watching the show yet, seriously, get on it.
